Paris riots; a natural result of a criminal modern architecture? (kids destroy)

"As a matter of urgency, we must stop considering architecture, urban and landscape design as products of techniques, rationalities, methods, economy, hard sciences, specifications, or narcissism. Last year, in the French Clichy-sous-Bois, we saw riots when young people burned 1000 cars in 20 days as well as many public buildings, and how it had been triggered by a criminal modern architecture. If the 20th century was overwhelmed by the power of technology authority, the 21st century will probably endeavour to soften and try to rehumanize its citizen`s behaviours and by the way, also its architecture.
We should first place inhabited environmant along with human and global knowledge system: intuitive, ecological, relational, emotional, experienced, etc. Instead of seeing it as a frigid mechanism or as merchandise.
Only after that, may we talk abut inventing tools and intelligence: no one is useless as a servant, provided that he or she renounces taking power for him-herself. Hence, weshould reinvent the friendly and free relations we had with our techniques because they have become autistic and harmful. Architecture will then become once again humanitarian and hospi-table as it was in the pre-human epoch ( the Zeus of hositaltity René Schérer)"

humane architecture as a participitive social act - Peter Hubner schoolbuild (kids create)

Lecture this evening : audio file : architecture : why is participation important
file length - 1 hr 38 mins
by Peter Blundell-Jones, an architectural critic and more importantly a friend of Lucien Kroll`s. He translated Lucien`s book the architecture of complexity into english

last nights lecture was great, here is the audio recording of it,
full report to follow

after lecture : Lucien Kroll and Peter Blundell-Jones chat about this and that

playful social spaces : the architecture of Lucien Kroll

a corner for free play, but also an example of open participitive architecture, Lucien asked the bricklayers to make a shape of sorts at this corner; he gave very rough sizes but let them do their own thing. The result was the brickies made something beautiful, they really got excited by this invititation to openly create, they returned later with their families saying "I made that". A simple gesture that resulted with a form that couldent have been planned for by the architect. as you can see "functinally speaking" it does whats it supposed to do very well; an odd object for kids to walk over and play on.

architect, inventor, self help builder, someone who does architecture to "see the bright eyes of the people" : Peter Hubner
Lecture this evening : audio file : architecture and the participation of the user
length : 1 hour 25 mins
battery on recorder died so missing the last 20 minutes of very nice discussion

lecture description from poster
dazzling: his Gelsenkirchen project is deeply shaped upon the childrens initiaves: they transform themselves into designers and craftsmen of their own construction

my own thoughts on it;
truly inspiring; a man who has totally loved his work, working with clients, becoming part of a team, designing with ten year olds, "seeing the bright eyes of people"

archtitecture which is wholly cmmitted to the most open explorative communication process with client; they are excitied; they design; they help build. the result; the buildings are THEIRS, or so they believe and feel, even with 1% of the building work done by them; cutting a piece of timber, driving in a screw

this is about architecture which is about real life, healthy, inclussive, social. the result is the end of that amazing process which gives meaning and joy to the task of architecture; possibly the way it was before there were "architects", when communities did it themslves?

talk : From Bauhaus to our uncles house: eco decolonisation
a talk with Professor Sergio Porto, from the Politecnico di Milano, part of human space lab

Is there a type of order behind the old cities of Europe?

from this initial idea, Sergio ended up on a fascinating journey into the wolrd of science that has revealed some fascinating orders that do explain, in one sense, why places work

human space lab investigate a bottom up approach to town planning

he gave a talk about a new way to understand cities; an analysis of urban street, in mathematical terms derived from cmplex nets

from bauhaus to our uncles house,
original reason for urban journey; is there a type of order behind the old cities of euroope?

intro from lucien; 32 mins

audio file: eco landcapes : 1 hour
speaker : Luigi Cavallari

Landscapes and gardens as urban design have to grow by themselves...

gardeners role is simply preparing the conditions of hte birth of a maximum complexity, never imposing his rules.

the introduction from Lucien is in French, and Luigi`s talk is in Italian

a 2 and a half hour discussion

mostly in Italian, but also French, English, and a little bit of Gaelic

i made a point, roughly:

intro : architect, eco-activist, independant media activist:

I believe that if we, the human species, are still alive in 5000 years, we look back on history and say "how were we so stupid back then in the oil age, we nearly killed ourselves". it is a state of emergency, the world is in crisis, if allowed to continue with present means; we die.

But there are solutions, and partipating in those actions and projects leads to a beautiful existence, a social life with amazing people.

communication is the key; we need to improve our communication technichues and mechanisms to allow for the open participative dialogue about how to live ecologically. As an example of this; all the very important dialogues that have happened during this week with Lucien and his friends have been recorded and put on a blog, anyone can freely access and listen ot these discussions and add their own input. The Venice Superblog, The Bienalle and MOMA have been informed of this and they can point people in that direction.

It is my opinion that the "architectural world" has built walls around itself and talks and listens to itself; it is not listening to all those outside the walls which have real needs.

some years ago the building designed by le corbusier, la villa savoye, was seen as the seminal building of a new age. It is my opinion that the "architectural world" has built walls around itself and talks and listens to itself; it is not listening to all those outside the walls which have real needs.

At this point Ugo intervened and explained to people the significance of the villa savoye in terms of it being the model for the "machine age" which lead to the modernism that Lucien and his friends have reacted against

I finished with the last little point:

some years ago cuba was faced with a crisis; the soviet bloc fell and suddenly cuba experienced a peak oil situation; whereby the old ways that were used were no longer possible due to the severe shortage of the oil. so cuba had an emergency: how do we feed ourselves. The solution was an urban and agriciultural one; a series of local decentralised food production zones were created in local areas, local food markets were set up. people survived and they now have the same level of life systems as western ones with the difference that theirs is now sustainable because it is not oil dependant. a film has been made about this situation "the power of community; how cuba survived peak oil" (at this point the film case was held up and shown to the group): i believe that in many years people will look at this system as one of the most seminal architectural

last words from the last "national" pavilion: bon appettite
let this be the end of the "national" pavillion, let future bienales be about themes, regions, people. ....

bon appetit

this is a rough translation of the words in french of Patrick Bouchain, the man who was invited by the French Cultural body to be the architect in charge for the French Bienale, he in turn invited his friends to come and live in the pavilion with him. from here the story of the life in METAVILLA grew, to where it is now and to wherever it leads to tomorow....
