Text on wall of French pavillion occupied by EXYZT collective reads in Italian, French, Albanian, English:

The occupation of a palace

By a jubilant crowd is a common image of revoluionary excesses. It has been witnessed in various forms throughout the ages, depending on the historical context. The fact that the image keeps recurring makes it a ritual and necessary representation, an ingredient of the revolution itself. It embodies the hope for justice through the fair redistribution of
space. Occupation is the architectural expression of a social vision.

Metacity / Metavilla attempts to put this collective movement into practice. This event is to a classic architectural exhibition what implementation is to a concept. The public can experience the architectural design displayed there, and particularly assess the practical ideal being presented, not just as a utopian theory but as a concrete action that needs to be accomplished. In occupying this national emancipated pavilion and opening it up to the public in this unusual way, an architectural act is being performed.Probably the only such act that can be made in these times of insecurity and underlying tensions of war. The welcome of strangers, implacably "other", is more than ever a relevant act. Happily the joyful city on show in the pavilion really does exist, here and elsewhere. This exhibition is just a pointer.

IMC-ie dunk has been onboard METAVILLA for some days, he has travelled over land and sea to get here, visiting and living in various other places that perhaps toward which the "exhibition is just a pointer."

he prevoiusly lived and worked out of la condition publique, which is anotherplace Patrick Bouchain and his crew berthed some time ago.

he is amongst other things an architect, eco activist, gardener, land squatter, community media worker, street partier, wanderer, dreamer and do'er. In Ireland he worked with a group to attempt to turn Dublin into an eco city, last years art bienalle talked a bit about that; The Irish at Venice - Monks Garden

He came to the Bienalle not expecting much from the "architectural world", as he feels there is room for much impovement there. He was not aware of EXYZT's occupation of the French Pavillion beforehand, but on meeting old friends on arrival he was made to feel immediately at home, in fact he was invited to live there, to participate in the communal activites of cooking, cleaning, washing; eating, drinking, sleeping.

He Thinks Metavilla is something super as it points to the "other" world. But it is still closed, as is the Bienalle, people only enter if they pay. This should change, it should be open and free, so all people could come and participate in what should be an even greater jubilant crowd occupying this city. And who knows what that could lead to....

Writing in Cities, radical urbanism, sqatting, social centres On Sep. 04, 2006, he stated;

At the moment there is an ever growing radical network of autonomous spaces and ways of living that are about inclusivity, action for improved living conditions, DIY, self organisation and more: social centres, squatted villages, squatted city industrial space turned into organic food gardens, radical radio centres, reclaimed streets.......

We are wondering whether these ideas will be discussed in Venice, there was no mention at the london exhibiton (Future city: experiment and utopia in architecture 1956 - 2006). For a long time there has been walls put up against this "alternative" world but perhaps now it is getting to the time when the "architectural" world will have to listen to this new world of autonomous spaces and living, for many the "architectural" world has become sterile and lifeless, perhaps now it will have to be seriously confronted, perhaps Venice will be the meeting ground.

Who knows, maybe the "architectural" world will find that it is in this "alternative" world that the critical edge of architecture has been happening for the last while.

Perhaps we are on the virge of a new age, as the
anthropologist David Graeber said "But then, the anarchist century has only just begun."

un autre lieu est possible - another place is possible

Tilli gives METAVILLA the thumbs up

Ive added a cluster map, which will register the hits this story gets from people around the world, we will see how the discussion is widening.

Great stuff, and even Tilli is involved! I'm sure the food is great then!
EXYZT's involvement in the Biennale enhances the academic credibility of EASA! This rise to prominince is a great example to show to schools, sponsors, funding bodies etc.. when EASA requires their assistance!

hey ronan, nice to hear from you again - can you ask the irish ark student network if they would like to do a project and raise funds to build something in kibera, nairobi, kenya, africa : we have set up a support group here in genova and might be over there @ december/ january while the WSF is on : www.indymedia.ie

not sure if i met you julie b? but hi anyway, if your hungarian, i see there was some strange things there recently : www.indymedia.ie

yes, its great that EXYZT got to takeover and play in the french pavilion - it really was an amazing experience to live in METAVILLA for the few days i was there, drink a few drinks with tillie and raf and others and to see what they are saying to the architectural world

like we got to do back in roubaix 2 years ago....

whats being pointed at in Venice this year?

as stated above the text on the wall outside the building says "the joyful city on show in the pavilion really does exist, here and elsewhere. This exhibition is just a pointer."
id like to hear what you think that is about, a pointer to what

for me it is the growing "alternative world" that is growing and turning the old on its head, as METAVILLA has done, in my opinion, to the bienalle. but this is only the first step, there are still many weeks of bienalle yet to come

lucien kroll; architect, gardener, anarchist (as stated on article on wall "un autre lieu est possible") is to do a week long project from october 9 - 14th, perhaps that might spark things a bit further

interested in your opinions, easa : present and future architects, dreamers, makers of worlds of today and tomorow

lots of things happening here at a beautiful chaotic playful engaged speed and manner.

hes making a film; last night an angel visited us for dinner.....

hopefully METWtv will be online by tonight so we can bring our press conference to you, the world, followed by a communication action outside of the bubble that is the world of the bienalle

Press release : (French) Pirate hijacking of Venice
architectural Bienalle communications/ Widening the
discussion at the Venice Architectural Bienale 2006

Press meeting : 17;30pm (Italian time) today Wenesday
18th October 2006, on steps of METAVILLA, the french
pavilion, Giardini, Venice, Italia....
- Attempts to broadcast this Press meeting live over
the internet are happening at present at METAVILLA

Widening the discussion ;
This evening 5.00pm Italian time (4.00- irish time,
GMT) a talk will be given by Dunk to his friends in
METAVILLA and the architectural world about
architecture, eco activism, independant media work,
wandering and living.

This will be followed by the release of a press
release at 5.30 about the present state of affairs of
the Venice architectural Bienale and its attempts to
adress the difficult question of "cities, architecture
and society" in relation to improving communication
systems to facilitate a wider global discussion on the
subjuect. At present it is about 10% of the world
which has been invited to PARTICIPATE in the
discussion happening in Venice.

This will be followed sometime between 6.00 and 7.00pm
(Italian time) by a "communication action" on
Garabaldi street, just outside the Bienalle grounds;
where le petit cinema will show some films, some
dialogue will happen with whoever is there and some
pirate radio broadcasts will be made; all again
attempts to widen the discussion.

Due to a desire for healthier communication systems,
the website of EXYZT, the group invited to occupy the
French Pavilion for periods of art, creativity and
communal living, will attempt to replace the Venice
Superblog as the "portal between the bienalle and the
world".

EXYZT and their friends invite everyone to join them
on their adventure: to participate in their dialogue,
to share stories of their own realities, to make the
life that little bit more interesting, sustainable or
simply enjoyable.

over and out.

widening the discussion - ALLEZ LES PIRATES

- onboard the (French) pirate ship METAVILLA
a reflection on first encounter with the strange,
thought provoking "french pavilion" - an attempt at a
wider dialogue with the world, attempt to look at that
for which "this exhibition is just a pointer".
- Lucien Kroll, moments d`architecture
what if this was the most critical dialogue in all
this bienale? who knew about it, who came and
listened, could this audience be increased? - we
recorded, documented, informed the world and built our
own media due to limitations of venicesuperblog media.
- whats your view?
asking people their views; audio recording and
archiving of the spirit of things - "the French
Pavilion is the best and craziest says the German
girls".
- Donkey dialogues
the little man on the street: the little donkey and
his pal piggy engage in a series of discussions;
throwing out ideas, asking questions, in a physically
strategic position within METAVILLA, many missed them,
some dropped their stuff on poor little piggy and
donkey, but they battled on, maybe someone found out
something new, interesting, profound, or maybe just
funny. Little donkey saw one girl smile anyway.
- the others
So who`s here in this funny garden, talking about
stuff? what about those who cant get here, who have
not been invited, did not have the money, for whom the
life didn`t allow them experience "le pur pleasure
d`existence" maybe that could be fixed, maybe we could
invite them; Cuba, Albania, Sri Lanka, Mali, Kenya,
Kibera, Chiapas, Rossport............
