In searches of architectural non-formal education
easa is a good case for an exchange of ideas and knowledge. But I do not think, that this sole opportunity to become the best architect.
It is good when there are no borders (Belarus probably exception) and the student has more opportunities to know about architecture more. The Internet is a good way, but in Information Time, the good information to receive more difficultly. For this reason the Internet can decide only part of a huge problem in non-formal architectural education. And I am sure, that the non-formal education of the students - architects does not become isolated only on easa or other international meetings. I do not think, that thousand future architects, which do not come on easa, sit at home after educational events and have no other student's architectural actions.
Where interesting student's life, new calls, alternative opportunities of non-formal education?

hi zmitser
in dublin we are trying to make a "social centre", last friday we had a world premiere of film made by belfast direct action crew in a local community centre, this was the initial move at making the idea a reality.

community gardening, gig venue, space for experimentation and discussion....is what is being attempted
heres link

the barcelona place
seemed to be the best

Thank Duncan! I can assume, that the creation of the various social centers is one of the important directions in Western Europe. For the architects here there is a lot of work and it is a good case for new experience and practice. It is possible to be happy, that there are such films, which can inspire on any useful actions.

Our students work too with the children's social centers (designing of an interior, landscape). But it is possible in the future we can have something new (methods of work at the social centers, as a rule, very old). It will require new spaces and new functional zones. Now it is possible at active work of not governmental youth sector (state very slowly follows innovations and the chances are very small for reception of financing under the experimental project of social center).

Now in Belarus there is an interest to social architecture, and there is a state order for this architecture. It became very fashionable to make the projects of the children's centers, centers for the invalids. The new buildings of this type are created. But behind this interest the very terrible political problem disappears: Belarus ceases to be republic national and tends to republic social. For this reason the new social architecture is one of indicators of amplification of dictatorship. The social problems occur constantly, and to decide them to have each day. And it is very easy of the people to load by social problems and to hide political.

But I do not want to tell, that the social architecture should not exist and develop. But we should constantly think, that will be if … us teach to think, and it is correct, since this world depends on us, and the architect creates this world.

I look on education from the philosophical point of view and I think, that we (students - architects) are obliged independently to search for opportunities to develop the education, and we could have good results, if we have realized importance of our activity on a level of development of architectural education (political activity there is a second stage. This stage can and can not exist).

Good luck!

jim hayton, December 6, 2004 7:37:23 PM CET
Just pitching in, I often think that we architects- students spend much time discussing possibilites which already exist. Rather than recognising and adopting these social spaces we desire our own. Therefore we start by retracing the steps of others and result in creating further fragmentations in society.

Zmitser, I need to consider further your words on the Belarus situation.

Duncan, to help me clarify your goals for the pre-mentioned social centre, can you tell me what the >problem< is with existing "Arts Clubs".

Perhaps you know this one in Dublin, it sounds like a living example of what you want, or am I missing the point?

"" UNITED ARTS CLUB - DUBLIN

The United Arts Club has since its foundation in 1907 been a centre for people interested in literature, music, painting, drama and good conversation. Amongst its activities are the holding of exhibitions, concerts, recitals, discussions, lectures, poetry readings, chess and bridge.Since the Club is a centre of the Arts and a social club, it occupies an important place in the artistic and social life of the city.""

As a design footnote I acknowledge that such Arts Clubs throughout the UK are very conservative, historical buildings. There's one starting point for change!

Later,
Jim

ownership of the social centre is main issue, with that we say how long open, what goes on, what doesent, how to deal with situations when they happen, how to organise and manage- ie-consensus.

jim-not familiar with that arts club you mention, but having attempted to connect to arts societys and galleries, there are large fees, expensive to be there, and most importantly an invisible barrier whereby only a "certain" group of the population use, mainly artists. a social centre would be accessible by all and hopefully used by all

anyway
heres a piece "no logo" author, naoimi klien wrote re social centres in 2nd book "fences and windows"
she describes the rise of these centres as windows
www.nologo.org

when reading article you can imagine that she is describiing an EASA space? with maybe just a little more political discussion

jim, did you get down to RAMPART? it would be great if you or one of the team could get there, im sure they would have a lot to say re these issues; centres, communication, art, politics, urbanism, new teknology

www.rampartradio.co.nr
as described here in good earlier discussion
easa.antville.org

zmitser- thanks for your input, its healthy to hear perspective from ex-soviet bloc
i suppose the important thing is to try to create, or further the existing process, of "open system"-

1-communication and media tool indymedia;

2-neutral space for live discussion and interaction -social forum;
www.indymedia.ie

3- free software to enable to do so- open software
ifso.info

bottom line is, i suppose, some have started to discuss whats going on, what good, whats bad, what can be improved upon.
others have not yet joined the discussion
i hope more will, i think they will
we will be going to G8 in scotland with a few thousand others to non-violently protest against G8 and unfair trade rules that are killing millions

CAPTION:
A team from Dublin Corporation Housing Division boards up a house in Leeson
Street last April after shutting down a squatted 'autonomous social space'
that had been established in the building in 2003. The building had been
derelict for 10 years and is now derelict again.

HEADLINE:
Give us some space

FROM:
Seomra Spraoi
Dublin

This Friday evening, 3 December, a series of short documentaries will be
screened, at a venue off Francis St in Dublin (details below), on the
subject of autonomous social centres in Europe. This will be the first step
in an ambitious attempt to establish an independent social centre in Dublin.

Many readers will be aware of the success of autonomous social centres in
other European cities, independent of local authority, church, business,
trade union or other controlling body. These spaces have provided a focal
point for many of the social movements in the West, where public spaces have
been eaten away by consumerism, property speculation and the culture of the
car.

They celebrate collective cooperation and diversity and have numerous
day-to-day uses: community drop-in centre, inexpensive cafe, political
meeting space, library, gig venue, arts centre, internet cafe, to name a
few.

Usually these social centres begin as squats in derelict buildings and
eventually come to be accepted by the local authorities. Unfortunately,
Ireland is unique in Europe in that the authorities are utterly intolerant
of the tradition of squatting.

Several attempts were made in Dublin in the past couple of years to set up
an autonomous centres in buildings that had been derelict for years, but
these have been forcibly shut down by the City Council or by "heavies"
employed by the owners. Clearly the Council would prefer to see buildings
remain derelict rather than put to any use.

Today in Ireland there is virtually nowhere indoors for people to congregate
that isn't a pub or overpriced cafe.

Seomra Spraoi is the provisional name of a collective which has come
together to create such a space in Dublin. The aim of this Friday's
screening is to bring together people who are interested in such a project
and hopefully to inspire people through the examples in the documentaries.

Starting at 8pm, there will be a screening, photo exhibition and brief
discussion, followed by live music, a dj and a raffle. Refreshment will be
available. The venue is the St Nicholas of Myra Parish Hall, Carman's Hall
(a street running between Francis St and Meath St). Admission free. For more
information contact 087-2861238. Please come along!

Thanks Duncan for so huge help!

Though connection of the social center and a policy - was only the comment (probably over sensual) - this forum not for discussion of a politics in the countries (probably, that I am mistaken).
But I wanted to find out about activity of students in the European countries and development of non-formal education. Whether there is in general such concept as official national student's movement as the organizations (for example OSSA in Poland or BASA in Belarus) or clubs of students - architects; that is done by students for promotion of non-formal education or all student's activity associates with parties, study at university and picnics.
EASA I see as one of ways of realization of non-formal education, as well as participation in work of the social centers. But I think, that it not unique opportunities. Somewhere my question has connection with theme by Lewis (http://easa.antville.org/stories/998785/).

If it is brief, my question is reduced to:
* Whether there is an organized student's movement in the countries;
* That is done for development of our education.

Actually it is attempt also to find out force of influence of movement of students - architects on students - architects and a society in the countries, to see reality EASA today.

dubravka, December 13, 2004 12:16:53 AM CET
one way of non-formal education is comming from networks/artists collaboratives. one of which i was involved in several workshops is called school of missing studies [more info www.schoolofmissingstudies.net ]
unfortunately those things dont attract too many people.
student activism, however, played important role in process of democratisation of serbia during 90ties. these days i think people are a bit tired of fighting. it is more about surviving...
and yes fine example of non formal ark thing is platforma981.hr from zagreb.
and these days, post easa incm we are trying to create something like alternative space for ark in bigz.... if we succeed... there will be some nice things happening there.

our website keeps update of minutes from meetings and links

More musings on social centres in Ireland... is a bit more from darren who made a few films from visits he made to social centres around europe
www.indymedia.ie

all previous events, minutes, discussions the social centre can be found here on indymedia ireland
www.indymedia.ie

in "Something Maybe Beautiful" written by Naomi Klein, the italian social centre network (150 + @ 2001) was described in the Frenchnewspaper Le Monde as "the Italian cultural jewel."......
www.nologo.org

"Social centres are abandoned buildings—warehouses, factories, military forts, schools—that have been occupied by squatters and transformed into cultural and political hubs, explicitly free from both the market, and from state control. By some estimates there are 150 social centres in Italy."

this and further background can be found at critical discussion at monks garden, venice (commentry on and about the art world and in particular artist Sarah Pierces "monks garden" project that is part of the Venice Bienelle, the "art olympics" )
www.indymedia.ie

and as it happens theres a free street party the following day sat the 24th.
www.indymedia.ie

and on sunday the 25th there is an open garden and play day in the community garden we were invovled with creating in dolphins barn.
www.indymedia.ie

And if thats not enough you can join the dublin greenway cycle who will be stopping to have a picnic in the phoenix park.
www.indymedia.ie

So all in all it will be a fun filled and productive weekend of lively events, discussion, action, art, play. We hope you can make the journey up and join us, we should be able to sort you out with accomodation with our friends here in Dublin. Hopefully the Friday night will spark the wish to make the idea of a social centre a reality.
