Dublin´s Metamorphosis (EASA 08 conference audio)

(EASA conference, August 2008: “Listen to audio file here” : radio.indymedia.org ,1 hour 20 mins)

Discussion chaired by Frank McDonald, journalist with The Irish Times, on a broad range of architectural and developmental issues that have become apparent in Celtic Tiger Dublin. Contributors include Dr. Gary Boyd, Ciarán Cuffe TD, Robert Ballagh and Siobhain Ní Éanaigh. The majority of the speakers were very critical of Celtic Tiger Ireland, a change from previous "architectural discussion". “The talk happened in Docklands "white elephant", CHQ, aka: Stack A.”

Sunday August 10 2008 was the day of the discussion, day after the worst rainfall that Ireland had ever seen in the month of august, “a wake up call if ever there was one of how we have to adress climate chaos...”

radio.indymedia.org (original post: www.indymedia.ie )

"“Finally the realizion of Maggie Thatchers demented vision of there being no such thing as society” "

"“The end of the boom is something we should welcome, there will enter a period of recession, we can think about what legacy we have left...” "

So were 2 of the phrases used by Frank Mc Donald in his summary and introduction to over 400 architectural youth from all over Europe, who came last summer to our island to participate in a 2 week summer school exploring in Dublin and out west in Letterfrack, the theme of "adaptation"

1 - Intro from Frank Mc Donald 2 - Dublin architect Siobhain Ní Éanaigh explains about the river, boardwalk and other plans 3 - Dr. Gary Boyd, Scottish architect teaching in Cork school of architecture, talking about “public city, the politics of space and control, housing apartheid etc...” very good to hear these views expressed. 4 - Ciarán Cuffe TD for the Green party and architect, Dublin and its contrasts and green dreams. 5 - Robert Ballagh, artist and social political activist, talks about how CHQ was nearly the city art museum as well as his take on the city.

At some stages during the talk, the panel discussed the "local community" at the other side of the big walls, Sheriff Street and North Wall, 2 years ago I did a radio interview with Mary Cummings from NWWC, North Wall womens centre, in which she describes her story of a changing town. Listen here; www.indymedia.ie

This talk was followed by the GREEN AND BLUE walk, one of the many post talk city wanders, this one walked along a possible Dublin city greenway and food production zone, the Botanic Spine.

Need help, your ideas and suggestions!!!

Hello guys, Love u all, miss u, but first

Prehistory • I’m with my friend have got a diploma work in British school of design (Moscow). The diploma work means to create an interesting project which includes – design of the corporate identity, all supporting graphic stuff (booklets, banners, flyers etc)

Idea • Now we are in great searches of the theme. I really struck on the idea to get the theme to design corporate identity for some festival, or maybe a café, or anything else.

We got the small experience of designing corporate identity for festivals in Russia. Check out our previous work orbinnibor.ru

I’m asking you to help us to find a theme, I mean You can ask your heads of the offices where you work, or schools where you study about the project. In the century of high technology I think that it’s possible to work and collaborate through the distance.

We will work enthusiastically and because it’s a diploma project we can do it for free.

I wrote above what we can offer now I’m waiting for your reply) Any ideas, suggestions are welcome! Many hugs!!

dasha@turnupthevolume.su

I wrote a crosspost in Facebook.

EASA to the rescue

Hello EASA people,

I come asking for help. In Slovenia, we are currently conducting a crusade (well, we try to be really lound and annoying) against a proposed building for a national and univeristy library. The government wants/wanted to build a project which won a competition in 1989, and it is a frankensteinian, nonfunctional postmodern monster which we do not want in our city.

We are in the process of lobbying for a new competition and want to present case studies from abroad. We need examples of libraries which:

 • are in the EU region,
 • are national or university libraries (preferably both in one building),
 • were built after 1995,
 • are the result of a open public (preferrably international) competition,
 • and of course are good architecture!

If you can think of any, please share! Examples which we found so far include the Royal Danish Library, Czech National Library (competition), university libraries of Cottbus and Utrecht, Amsterdam public library (although that's a city library, so doesn't quite count).

The point is that we have to convince the ministry that the library is a building of national interest, and has a much larger meaning than just being a place to put books in.

If you think of any libraries, it would be great if you remember / find out who the client (competition promter) was - we want to make contact with them and get more information to persuade the ministry.

Thanks for your help!

Cheers, Boris
