Day 5

The day of EASA010 Evaluation

The meetings were held in the North side of the city, at the chamber of Turkish Cypriot architects. Around midday presentations began for Turkey then UK. Both teams were asked to leave the room while the other was presenting. After these two amazing presentation, a discussion started within the Nc's in order to get questions for both team, the teams came back to the reunion room, answered the questions and left until late in the night when a consensus was reached. We got this consensus through a long process; we made a first tour of opinions from everybody, and then divided into small groups to discuss the main topics that came out from the "round table". Different groups presented their conclusions and we got another personal tour: everybody agreed, consensus reached; the decision was made. It was decided that one of the previous EASA’s organizers should announce the decision:

Neal would speak:

"I just like to say to both sets of organizers that the quality of presentations was great and they have set new standards in presentation and efforts for EASA proposals. We have decided that EASA 2010 is going to Manchester. We felt that the Turkish bid was totally capable of organizing an amazing EASA event that many of us would have loved to attend. However we thought that the proposal of the UK would bring EASA in a refreshing direction for the current and future generation of EASA attendees. At this point I would like to say commensurations to the Turkish organizers and good luck to the UK"

Everything was said so we all moved to party in great Nicosia! elsa

day 3 and 4

Day 3: The day of no internet...

tuesday started with presentations for SESAM and EASA italia. both looking good, who fancies living in a zoo, better check you sleeping partners before dozing off!

discusions were focused into small groups covering all the issues brought up so far in order to be more productive. Too many to go into now, but some highlights were the archive and logo discusion; the domain for the new website will be easa000.net (if available). The links on the new site will be split between 'official' and 'network'. The logo will remain as a box that 'could' be adapted for event logos too.

then paul went to hospital for being the wrong colour, got an injection and is looking a bit better, fingers crossed he can do his presentation tomorrow.

day 4 the day of the excursion.

today we made a start at 8.00 on a big fun coach. the tour of the island took us to a university dorm (the fees to stay there must be high!) and then the Cyprus Olympic centre, the HQ for the country's sporting associations. After the buildings we headed to the beach in aiya napa.

Another crossing of the buffer zone saw us heading to Famagusta. We caught a great lecture and then had a brief tour of the abandoned sector then the walled city.

We got some interesting food at the university before heading back to the gym for a night off in preperation for the 2010 proposals tomorrow morning.

second day

Today started with a lecture about the master plan of Nicosia.

Debates moved on at a fierce pace with most constructive output. The discussions were about: the aims of EASA and the duties of the NCs, the fees groups and total fees and sponsorship issues.

A lot of rugby was played also, something I do not excel at, it must be said.

Once more we are gathered in anticipation of a fine meal and a bit of light socialising, followed by another night on squeaky camp beds.

stay tuned for more bat updates.

INCM008 first day

hello to everybody who can't be here in beautiful cyprus (28°C) where the INCM008 has started with great success! :)

yesterday (after shorter or longer trips) we gathered in Faneromeni Hall and got a very nice welcome of the organisers. afternoon was tea and chat and at night we were taken to a kebab-restaurant (of course) and some wonderful bar with a big terrace.

today work started! in the morning (too early for me but after a well nutriting breakfast) we went on a trip round nicosia. it was great. then toast and sandwiches before debate. today was dominated by discussioning the quota, major progress was made: some of us are gonna propose tomorrow a change to the easa-guide. now we're preparing to go for more kebabs. more updates tomorrow! umbrella can suck it - we are the official broadcasters for incm008.

Grafton Architects wins world architecture award

Grafton

Grafton Architects, who lectured at this year's EASA, run by Shelley McNamara and Yvonne Farrell, have scooped the first World Building of the Year award at the inaugural World Festival of Architecture for their new faculty building at Bocconi University in Milan.

The awards are the biggest and most wide-ranging architectural awards programme in the world, designed to "celebrate the work, concerns and aspirations of the international architectural community" according to its director, Paul Finch. At a time when many architectural practices in Ireland - including Grafton - have been laying off staff due to the downturn in the building industry, the news from the festival in Barcelona was particularly welcome.

A total of 224 buildings in 17 categories from 43 countries made it on to the shortlist. Grafton had already won the premier award in the "learning" category for their mammoth Milan project and then went on to win the overall award.

Nicosia: in-between

Borders divide and connect at the same time/ Borders exist for some groups of people and do not exist for others / They divide space in “here” and “there”, “inside” and “outside”, creating social divisions between “us” and “others”. / Fear is created, but also curiosity about the “others” / Division of space is further established by daily practices, but also new ways of border crossing are invented by the desire of communication INCM008 – WORKSHOP _ 8-10 November 2008 www.incm008cy.com

The EASA CY invites you to the Student Workshop included in in the INCM008 [Intermediate National Contacts Meeting] event which will take place on 1-11 of November in Nicosia.

Supported by Chambers of Architects of Cyprus (Chamber of Civil Engineers and Architects of Cyprus, Chamber of Turkish Cypriot Architects) and organised by architects and sociologists of different nationalities the workshop is aiming to examine and analyse the case of Nicosia as a divided city.

Nicosia: In-Between

The EASA INCMeeting, is proposing a 'stitch' on the border line which divides, still, Nicosia in two parts: An arrangement of places, for living and meeting, will be spread inside the centre of Nicosia, on both parts of the city and in the buffer zone. For the limited time the INCM008 'event' will be taking place, another -in between- geography will be created and superimposed on the space of the divided city. Since the opening of Ledra Street, the second crossing point in Nicosia, the city is witnessing the first effects of change: property prices are rising, buildings are renovated... This transitional period, depending on the political negotiations, could last for a few more months or for years. Τhe city and its present inhabitants will continue to live and experience an ‘in-between time-condition’. Before the total regeneration of the whole of the city, this suspension of time, provides a critical time-'gap' which allows for documentation, speculation, imagination and alternative thinking of the city’s -unique- condition. In this context, the Workshop organized for the INCM meeting in Nicosia, will take advantage of this in-between condition, to focus on the relation of ‘borders and space’ inside the city.

Workshop Brief: The Workshop consists of two parts: A. Urban Narratives project: Between 4-10 November participants of the EASA meeting are encouraged to deliver traces of their own experience of the divided city, the practice of crossing, the architecture of the border and division etc. The ‘archiving’ procedure will take advantage of the EASA proposed geography inside the city and the event of daily crossings and meetings in places in both parts of the city. Critical observations and individual narratives recorded in images / videos / sounds / texts / inventories / maps etc. could provide a vast collection of impressions on the city's present condition.
B. Parallel -intense- workshops will be organized in the last three days, between 8-10th of November, focusing on the buffer zone condition and the city center. Other activities such as lectures, documentary screenings and site excursions will provide important related information to the participants. On the 10th of November an exhibition and a joint presentation of the outcome of the workshops will take place in Ledra Palace. More information on the workshops will be presented on Monday 08.11.2008. The participants of the workshop will get a certificate from Chambers of Architects of Cyprus.

Workshop Tutors: Pelin Tan (Sociologist, PhD candidate Art History ITU) / Petros Phokaides (architect, NTUA PhD candidate) / Fereniki Vatavali (architect, NTUA PhD candidate) / Maria Kosti (architect) / Chara Stefanou (Aural and Visual Cultures, UCy PhD Candidate)

Final critics: Anber Onar (art critic) / Aristides Antonas (architect/writer) / Pavlina Paraskevaidou (Phd Candidate curator/writer) / Fevzi Ozersay (Phd architect)
