final tutorpack/bulletins/essays/para-plöfscha

the final version of the tutorpack is online. we intend to increase the content, concerning theme, location info and especially essays, as a collaboration with the future umbrella people. the additions should be the bulletins mentioned in the easa-guide.

so this is a call for essays! read alex' essay in the tutorpack and get excited to write your own. it doesn't need to follow the narrative style, just give it your own shape for us to get the biggest possible diversity! a swiss essay is coming up for sure, some more would be great! treat the topic "trans - transit - transition" from your point of view: give us your personal look at the development of the cities in your country, at the flows and traffics of goods, knowledge and ideas in europe, at the change of settlement structures due to infrastructural interventions, at your very personal urban sprawl, traffic system evolutions in your country!!!

concerning umbrella-paraply-parapluie: to continue the tradition concerning the name, we thought of calling it officially in raeto-romanian, the official 4th language of switzerland spoken in the area around bergün by 1% of the swiss population (70'000 people) and nowhere else in the world. so the name is gonna be para-plöfscha. if there are any heavy protests concerning unpronounceability, let us know!!!

best wishes and greetings

deadlines

dear nc’s!

as announced last week, we have to indicate a couple of deadlines. these are the following ones (you can find them on the website too):

application for participants according to the quota list: 01.05.2005 application for workshop proposals: 15.05.2005 publication of the winning projects of the competition: 15.05.2005 application for extra places: 01.06.2005

we hope you do your best to fulfil the deadlines. especially for workshops, we’d be rather grateful if you’d be in time as we have to organise all the materials (we still count on your help in finding sponsorships for workshops you bring along). as usual, one tutor per country is not included in the quota, so countries who organise a workshop have one place more. for the applications, this means the following: you apply ALL of your participants and NONE of your tutors. application forms for tutors are going to be filled in AFTER the decision whether their workshop is accepted or not.

tutors first fill in the application for a workshop (workshop requirements > download the word file and fill it in directly, afterwards send it to workshops [at] easa005.ch). in a discussion with the tutor, we will find out whether the workshop is going to take place or not. after that, the tutors will get one place per workshop. workshops with two or more tutors require enough places within the quota of their country!!!

there is an updated version of the tutorpack available. it contains more information concerning the workshop locations. the definite version will be uploaded within two weeks at the max. after that, you will get further information concerning the location, switzerland in general and further details concerning the theoretical background in bulletins (produced in collaboration with the umbrella people).

so, thanks in advance for being in time. i don’t need to remind you of swiss watches, do i?

:-) flo

example: swasiland has 10 places according to the quota list and brings one workshop with 3 tutors. this means the following: swasiland can bring 8 participants and 2 tutors included in the quota. for one tutor, swasiland gets an extra place. so in total, swasiland can bring 11 people.

in your mailbox and here:

dear all

it’s quite some time ago that you got some general information from us by mail, so it’s gonna be very long. i usually put all the stuff on the website announcing it on the weblog. but today, it’s really necessary for everybody to get informed:

the competition is starting today! from now on, you can download the necessary material that enables you to design a new garden pavilion on top of the old foundation walls in front of the kurhaus bergün. besides the stuff you need to participate in the competition, there is also a poster. we would like you to print it out and spread it around at your school and if possible at other schools of your country too.

other facts are rather pleasing as well. on the list of lecturers, we could add another nice swiss architectural office, the former president of the city of zurich and – thanks to rune (dk) and johannes (de) – even winy maas (mvrdv) said he would be interested to have a talk-like appearance at easa005.ch. as we had in mind to organise discussion rounds with all the lecturers anyway, we might meet each other somewhere in the middle.

our team has right now 16 actively working members in different departments. you have for example already heard/read on the blog from simon and bettine taking care of the competition. saskia and marcella are busy with the location, steffi (our good old nc) is taking care of the kitchen. we still hope to get tillie again – cook of easa 2004 in lille, and there is a swiss guy (another tobi) who confirmed to get done the logistic stuff for the kitchen. eliza is going to take care of the visa (wadda rhyme!), sylvie and niklaus will organise the exhibiton business. silvia will organise the excursion as soon as she’s well again (…), johann the events, ben and cordula have already provided the tutorpack, and tobi and me wanna try our luck in getting sponsors and doing all the small shitty jobs :-). we still need a lot of money as you can imagine. but we’re even supported by some hardworking international conspirators, so it’s gonna work out anyway.

for after the event, we have in mind the following scenario: the results of the workshops will be exhibited from the end of easa on the 21st of august until the end of september. during that time, we will work out the material we got from the tutors to end up with a good exhibition that is going to travel through the arch-faculties of switzerland to the final station in zurich at the beginning of december. in december, the release of the new issue of the semiannual architectural magazine “trans” is going to happen during the opening of the exhibition. trans offered us around 50 pages under the topic “transit” (traffic in europe…) in their magazine. it will be our main publication for the results of the event, and you can order it during easa if you want to keep a souvenir. for the same day in december (or for a later period), we plan to provide a light-version of the exhibition (prints only) to send to you as pdf-format. in the best case we will be able to cover your printing costs, so we could have a general euopean opening of the easa-exhibition at the beginning of december!

next steps in the organisation will be to settle down guidelines for the workshops. probably until the end of this week, I can upload the “technical requirements”, and the tutorpack is being put through the hoops once more. we are aware that we also awe you a quota list. you will get it as soon as we have discussed the last fire issues and know how many people we can invite exactly. for the next few months, I’d like to inform you monthly with a bulletin that can be looked at as an umbrella-newspaper-daughter. that’s the way to set up a well working umbrella that is going to be the real communication tool during the assembly. if we finally manage to send you the bulletins, we’d like you to spread them out among participants, potential tutors, and possible sponsors for your workshops. I clearly want to state that we count on your and the tutors’ help concerning fundraising for the workshops as it is stated in the easa-guide!

I leave you in peace now, happily and unreasonably hardworking as I am… the last thing I’m going to ask you for is to send me some feedback. what are your thoughts if you read a) these news, b) the tutorpack, c) the competition stuff (I know that you might remember one or another passage of the competition brief from the danish one we had two years ago)??? what do you wish for, recommend, want, hate?

thank you very much anyway

flo
