Burning the Irish Bar

The Burning Man festival is located in the Blackrock Desert, 15 miles outside Gerlach, Nevada in the US. It is situated on a million acres of dried lake bed and on a clear day it seems possible to see the curvature of the earth. Nothing grows here, and for eleven months of the year nothing lives here.

This is a gathering of like-minded individuals who come together in a celebration of alternative art and culture. During the day people wander around the playa looking at and interacting with the ingenious creations that people have brought with them.

The atmosphere is one of fun and openness. People bring presents to exchange with new friends. These take the form of pieces of art, jewellery, stories and even food and sweets. No money is exchanged in almost all of the camps (the only things money can be used to buy are ice, chai, tea and coffee).

What we have done in 2002 was to bring an Irish Bar to the desert. First of all I should explain the motivation behind this concept. Everywhere that my friends and I have travelled there has been an Irish bar. From the far away lands of the Northern Territories to the depths of winter in Russia, a pint of Guinness can be enjoyed in the friendly atmosphere that can only be found in a Kitty O Sheas or a Dirty Nellys. We want to bring this to the desert. To one of the most inhospitable places in the world we want to bring the Irish hospitality.

But not only this. We want to bring it back year after year. Each year using new people and different ideas. This bar should be a representation of the Irish spirit and should strive for originality, creativity and the spreading of goodwill worldwide. Each year the Irish bar and gallery will be stocked with alcohol and art. Everything will be given away for free, expecting nothing in return. No barter will take place. This is completely gift culture. The Irish all around the world are known for their artistic nature, hospitality and party attitude. What better place to demonstrate the innate artistic nature and good attitude of the Irish.

This gathering is growing every year. Documentaries can be seen each year on Channel Four and other television stations. There is also a web site that can be found at www.burningman.com. This is not a pretentious festival. Art lovers gather every year to live in the moment. Appreciate something beautiful for a week and then burn it all. Everything that is there is for the people who are present and no one else. Art, creativity and originality are celebrated daily and the people who attend this festival take their experiences with them for the rest of their lives.

When we arrived we had no idea how welcome we would be made feel. People thanked us for the effort we had made and congratulated us on the great job we had done. We count the days to next years burn and encourage everyone who likes the idea to get involved.

By the way Duncan isn't relly as big a lunatic as you all think (I happen to know the man personally)

By for now,

DOK

"EASA will be a political experience" says monsieur albatros

EASA04 is looking great lads loved the intro piece "new micropolis"

"EASA is a a summer republic..... this year EASA will be a political experience"

this MAYDAY sees the accession of the new member states to the EU WHAT TYPE OF EU are we building?

been busy here in ireland- putting on an :: indymedia festival :: exhibition (open participitave system), workshops, screenings, forums

we are making a media centre for the week leading up to mayday, 10 days, from Friday April 23rd, until Monday May 3rd

Ireland is hosting the "day of welcomes" for the accession of new member states to the EU there is lots of media hype here at the arrival of anarchists to destroy the city

as Daithí Doolan, Sinn Féin representative for Dublin South East puts it clearly:

"People have suggested it is a protest against expansion, against letting in the new countries. On the contrary, we support expansion, but we, new member states and old, need to have a debate about the kind of EU that we are building

believes another Europe is possible. One where 55 million men, women and Children are not living in poverty, where vital public services are not open to privatisation and where the ongoing militarisation of the EU and erosion of Irish neutrality is halted, and reversed. People accuse us of being anti-EU, when in fact we're simply opposed to a Europe written on terms dictated by big business and corporate lobbyists"

but like all things communication is the key

ARCHAOS PRESS RELEASE Re: Forum, 28 November 2003

“What If..?!”- the archaos forum on the future form of education throws up some strong opinions from the student body

The forum was held from 10am-5.30pm at Westminster School of Architecture in London. There were reps from 23 schools of architecture present, from around the country- from Brighton to Plymouth to Cardiff to Dundee.

The purpose of the Forum was to discuss the future form of Architectural Education, with the ultimate aim of producing a coherent set of proposals formulated by the reps, for publication and discussion by the profession. Speakers included Kate Heron (Head of School at Westminster and Chair of SCHOSA), John Lyall (Compiler of the RIBA guide ‘Tomorrow’s Architect’) and Jeremy Till, who gave a personal viewpoint on how architects should be educated. In addition we had a presentation from EASA, the European Architecture Students’ Assembly.

This was the hihgly successful exhibition space for the ark dept. there is a need for a noticeboard for the school. There should be 2 way talk about this. See www.easa.antville.org for more details. Dunk ASA-4th ark

DIT was a very lifeless school of architecture a few years ago. things started to change- more events, more interaction, a healthier spirit. a result of this was the ASA (architectural students association)initiave to put up an exhibition space along a long, then unused, coridor. it was a huge success with each week the space being used by a different year, from this further interaction between years and between ark and technology years happened more of this productive exhibition and communication was intended this year. at the first ASA meeting a member of staff from technology came in and informed us that we no longer had that space and that instead it was to be used for his year planner for the school. this planner will help things a bit but we feel that it can be positioned in another place in the school, a proper notice board should be constructed. there was also no consultation with us, the students on this issue, we were just told- its gone, we are using it now. we feel that the keeping of this exhibition space is essential to further allow the spirit of the school to grow. the start of the year planner went up 2 days ago, as a reaction against this. a note was put up yesterday, it was taken down. as a furhter reaction i put my first project up- exhibited it and put up a note, stating what is written on top. an emergency meeting has been called for today at lunch time we hope the students get behind this, see the importance of having this space and indeed that we do keep it.

lucy in india

from UK lucy, now DOing architecture work in india image 1 This is Bhabhi, who is the community leader of the Kamgar Putala slum who we are rehousing, the project is currently under construction, we are up to the plinth beam, she's sat in the office of Baandhani which is a womans slum dwellers federation that does micro-credit saving schemes.

image 2 this is the office doorway, being decorated for Dassera, a festival where you worship the tools, previously for warriors thanking their weapons for life. At the front is Sandhya who is a social worker, who has been at Shelter since the beginning, and behind is Gita, the acountant, who teaches me Marathi. They are decorating the floor with coloured salts. They are both absolute sweethearts.

image 3 My favourite building in Kamgar Putala slum, i like the detailing and composition of the material palette, it's very nice inside, very shiny, with lots of metalware, and some beautiful framed prints of some gods.
