byebye physical archives?
it's been rather silent since the awesome website was released, on which Hana and Dijana were working on. I still think its's a important matter, for reasons mentioned in a earlier post. Obviously there's still a lot of work to do and a lot of things to discuss in order to get a decent appearence on the web. There won't be a workshop this summer and i'd like therefore to give a short overview about the current situation and maybe suggest further moves.

I'd say it was a quite anticipating idea to digitalize the physical archive during the last two years, since, well, it's gone. correct me if i'm wrong ( and I truly hope i am), but there were only two physical easa-archives: One in Copenhagen, which has been thrown away. And now guess in which faculty building the second was... exactly! does any dutch know anything about it whether it was somewhere else or if it somehow escaped the flames for some reason? And does anyone know if there's another archive somewhere?

If not, then there's not much left except for two harddrives (one with pernille in cph and one here in Zürich), which are not at all complete (entire years are missing), but at least they have a decent amount of information, pictures and films.

There's also some stuff spread all over the world in the shelters of some estimated 10000 easians...

other things that were developed but hardly discussed/agreed on during last easa/INCM/blog are the use or uselessness of a eas-calendar, blog vs. forum (i changed my minde a little bit) and the Logo once again.

Not too many easians join the discussions here on the blog, wherefore i suggest we'll also talk about it during a nc-meeting in Ireland. If they're in any way similar to the ones in elefsina ("are there any problems with anything?... not?... some cookies anyone?" ;) ) it should be possible...

cheers!

well, besides the fact that in the larger surroundings of the faculty (>5 km) burnt papers were found on the streets and in gardens, and some of that has been returned, i can only say

nope.

everything (which was about 1.5 meters of paperwork, photos and reports) was lost :-(

but.

why is the cph archive gone?

ronan_mc, Thursday, 12. June 2008, 14:55
If it's really all gone, that is terrible

But we must look on the bright side - we can talk about the Olympics at NC meetings in Ireland

luishilti, Thursday, 12. June 2008, 16:20
That's sad. Although easa mainly happens in the very moment, it would have been fun/interesting to look a little closer at it's history. At least the things that remained are inspiring.
I don't know too much about the loss in cph. Some unfortunate coincidences and a dean that obviously wasn't a easian himself, who made this fatal descision. but it doesn't really matter. It's gone.
I prefer silent cookies to olympics.

dijana omeragic, Thursday, 12. June 2008, 16:30
and i have been really trying to get people moving on the website me and Hana did, it was going reaaally slow since everyone was busy with the end of the school year ... but now it seems we are stuck! Jelk offered to help and we had it settled but now i dont know what to do... guess wait till easa?

and my appologies to Irish crew.. i know how much they needed the web site to be finished ... and how it would be easier for sponsorships! Sorry lads!

luishilti, Thursday, 12. June 2008, 18:08
wait till easa and start a semiformal website-group there, discuss the website at an nc-meeting and develope it as far as possible seems the most realistic scenario for me. Or has anyone a better idea?

Jelk and Marko, will you be there in Letterfrack?

jelkkruk, Friday, 13. June 2008, 18:38
No i won't be in EASA 2008, but I don't think you really need me. Our young architecture firm just 'sponsors' the site (webhosting + domain). I don't think the plan is that I/we work on the site, except maybe managing some settings.

Also I think we should try to find digitized/digital movies and pictures. Johannes Br. (DE) has quite a selection including the movie made in the Train easa in Scandinavia (1997.easa.tk) (!!). On my personal site there are several links to old websites or pictures from past EASA's. See easa.jelkkruk.com. I think it was 2001-2002 that digital/digitized pictures, personal websites etc came into being. From earlier years there is hardly anything to find on the net. Possibly there is more materials that we need to find in the informal circuit.

Also I think it is a nice plan to make all (old) EASA websites available from easa.tk as well. For example in this format: 2001.easa.tk. From 2001-2008 still most of the years are available ('01; '02; '03; '05; '07; '08) and only France (2004) and Hungary (2006) are missing.

They used to exist and maybe can be restored via new NC's. Possibly we can find some of the older original websites from this cd-rom that Jurrien mentioned. If I remember well, it was a result partly from the scanning of a part of the archive done by the croats in 2001/2002 + a tiny bit digital material from the time that internet and computers weren't that common yet.

However most of the archive might not be too spectacular, and maybe it is a better plan to just start documenting the EASA's that happen from now on and from the times that there is still material available. It can be a selection of images, movies, paraplu's (umbrella's) and workshop results. It doesn't need to be that hard.

i think there is enough material to fill a nice website and older and newer materal can be added later. I am very curious for the new design...

Jelk

PS: from my past EASA's (2001-2006) I never seen any publication, such as for this magazine that we paid for in Switzerland, the Danish or any other. Do they exist or did they never come into being?

luishilti, Friday, 13. June 2008, 18:52
there's a poster from time to time announcing that it'll be out soon, finally (remaining of the guys that are annauncing the end of the world from time to time, soon, finally). They've been working on something for 3 years. Since the texts were mainly written 3 years ago, it's hard to say what excactly that something is. We'll see, maybe.

I was just asking, didn't expect you to work on anything. the link to the website is a good idea. we'll see during the easa how we collect what kind of data.

sennahoj, Saturday, 14. June 2008, 00:21
well.. hope to be in Letterfrack (again), if anyone cares .. ;) and things i can tribute, are a dina4 journal of 1997,
a vhs tape of the same year, the cd's of the archive, ranging between 1981 and 2001 (though they should be spread around).
and even though a lot has been collected in the archives
of both Delft and Copenhagen, there is still plenty of paperwork around, so hopefully not all is lost, yet obviously tracking the remaining parts will be tedious.
there is still talk about a secret room full of easa's history, predating everything before 2003,
watch this place ;)

that the archive project is close to dead...if not dead, all its limbs blown off with some severe brain damage.... I guess easa will remain as that person something that everyone has great memories of.....but no-one remembers any particular details of the morning after!

jurnalism, Friday, 13. June 2008, 14:27

Pfew, I think I am the last one to have seen the archive in one of the TU Delft's Bouwkunde kabinets - me and wouter took some of it to show in Moscow 2006.

The archive went from 1981 to about 2001 and the number of papers per year varied from stacks of about a centimeter to about 10cm - a full Leitz ordner that is.

I must say, not everything was truly useful to give a good impression of previous easa's, since most of the stored material was produced before the events: bulletins, folders, mails between NC's. There were a handful of photographs and of course some umbrellas, which could have been telling. Also, some video tapes. One was saved, I believe: I sent it to Russia last year.

Either way, of course it is very sad that it's gone.
To say that the archive project is close to dead however (re: conor) is a bit of a pre-emptive strike - killing the motivation of the people involved with the pretty website. Let's first inquire what documents still do exist.

As for the Dutch archive, there are some part of it saved as scans on a CD-Rom - which was brought to INCM Moscow by me and Wouter Homs.

Also, of the recent easa's it should be possible to find enough materials to give a nice overview.

For the online archive, some simple data are enough - place, name, theme, etc. What I understand as what was the main goal of the archive, was to record easa activity in a clear, accesible overview in order to have a document of easa heritage.

The main goal was not to post the most complete databank of all the paperwork produced over the last 25 years. And, as I said above - with all the respect to the value of the archive that was here in Delft - it was mainly a collection of paperwork belonging to the organizational aspects of an easa - not a beautiful representation of what easa summer events behold.

so... it's not dead... it's just gonna be compact!

cheers

Jurrien

luishilti, Friday, 13. June 2008, 15:51
...there was also quite some scanning done in greece and it wasn't a joke that there's a lot of stuff out there in the big, wide world. google makes it simple to find it. i just recieved a few final reports from a former swiss nc. (with the huge effort of writing 2 short mails).

conor: if that's a fundamental statement, that we don't want a archive (next step is to get rid of this missleading word), then this is a point (on which i disagree, though). but the shit, that happened is not reason enough to throw the work of two INCM- and one easa-workshop and the effort of the webdesigners down the drain, in respect of all the stuff we still have. That's at least my opinion.

sennahoj, Saturday, 14. June 2008, 00:27
quote jurnalism:/
The archive went from 1981 to about 2001 and the number of papers per year varied from stacks of about a centimeter to about 10cm - a full Leitz ordner that is:/

the CD's were originally scanned in by Croatians for 200? (not sure!?) and they were put onto CD by a Dutch guy, and then copied by myself (with a bit of delay) for INCM in Berlin (or Bornholm ?)
most of them still in my ( and about 50 more people Europe-wide ) possession.. happy to pass them on anytime.

conor, Saturday, 14. June 2008, 12:04
how long does it take to finish this website archive???
A rough guess is that this work could be done by four people in a week. Its been 8 months since the INCM in Moscow and to be honest f*ck all has been done! and I can't see an end in sight either.

jelkkruk, Monday, 16. June 2008, 20:28
hey Johannes, I think this CD is the same as the one Jurrien is mentioning, as I gave it to him, after I received it from Richard (former NL-NC). I think there is two versions of this CD. The CD is made accessible with some kind of webpage navigation, organized by year. One of them works perfect in Internet Explorer, the second in all browsers. However, it is also possible to just browse through it with your windows explorer or macintosh finder (or whatever they use).

sennahoj, Tuesday, 17. June 2008, 11:29
hey jelk ... jupp, that's the one, the Croatian made a first scan of the paperworks which is a total of 5 CD's and afair Richard pimped it onto a single CD.

paradeiser, Friday, 13. June 2008, 18:14
sad news, but i second jurriens posting. we dont need all material ever produced at easa, an overview should be enough.
i got here some reports, minutes, umbrellas from 2001 on, and somewhere i got a bunch of CDs with old easa-material.
get some S3-online-storage and lets upload what we have to a shared data-pool (still some has to review and tag it)
just get someone to code a form to enter basic infos/tags and upload the files...

about the blog:
i'm just waiting for a new main-easa frontpage to go online, so i can adapt the appearance of the blog to the new layout.
(in what sense did you change your mind luis?)

...and sadly i wont be in letterfrack - but you can catch me online. i hope easa2008 will have a webcam on top of the bar!

all the best,
marko

sennahoj, Saturday, 14. June 2008, 00:30
if i happen to be at the bar, or basically,
if i happen to be in Letterfrack, my laptop/mobile
will be happy to oblige the need for a webcam.

and maybe..just maybe, i can get some _stable_
webspace related to another internet-based art form,
where payment won't really be an issue.
i will not be held responsible on this one though. :)

It's time to come forth with one of the darkest secrets of the aarhus easa legacy..

There is a secret aarhus archive.

It was passed on to me by the former aarhus NC so I guess it's kind of a heritage. Maybe thought of as a backup or maybe the work of a madman.....

I checked it out once, it consists of mainly cd's of scanned stuff going back to '81. there're also a couple of final reports -among others the legendary EASA train.

Since it's basically correspondance documents, it might be of little value to the archive; as a matter of fact it might only be a copy of something that already exists in cph.. nevertheless it exists whether the other archives are lost or not!

I have 2 huge carboard boxes with physical easa Material in my basement.
contains lots of what the german team in the years 1991-2003 approx. was involved in. includes several final reports. and some floppy disks (anyone still has a drive?) just had a rough look over it, and lots of it is accountant papers and correspondence ... but all in all it is about 10 Leitz plus ...

cheers daniel
