car free day

September 22nd is European/ world car free day

"Sustainable living" happened @ EASA003 in Denmark
Now we can DO something about it: join in the activities in your city, get all your friends and college mates involved, get your granny down for the street party

Get onto the streets, make them clean, habitable and fun places again

The European Mobility Week and "In town without my car!" initiatives arose from a finding: today almost 40% of the transport sector's CO2 emissions are produced by the use of private cars in cities.

A switch to more efficient and cleaner forms of transport would contribute to a reduction of traffic congestion, air pollution, traffic related diseases and noise.

Awareness raising, promotion of changes in behaviour and involvement of citizens are the key words for the development of a sustainable and efficient urban transport.

Official European website for the European Mobility Week - ... www.22september.org

“EASA`s first European architectural event”, was an attempt to get us (Europe’s student architects ) to DO something positive for European car free day last year, to recognise that “cars in the city” is a major SUSTAINABLE issue we have to deal with. In Dublin hundreds of us “reclaimed the streets” and partied. We will be doing so again this sep22 and we hope you also get involved with the RTS street parties in your area. Check your local INDYMEDIA website to get further local details,
indymedia.ie (just click on country/ place name in left panel)

if there is no RTS party near you, be creative and make one, see www.reclaimthestreets.net for more info

In more than 20 European countries over 88 million European citizens will be taking part in a wide range of activities dedicated to the promotion of sustainable mobility and transport modes. “In town without my car!” day (Car Free Day) is falling on a working day, Monday 22 September, which is in 3 days time

This year, the Car Free Day will be celebrated in more than 1100 European cities and towns, with 936 participating and 265 supporting cities.
You can find out what’s going on in your area at
www.22september.org

Many cities around Europe will be closing off large parts of the city centre to cars and public transport will run for free.
In Dublin the city council are closing off no roads (i talked to the chief organiser) and they are not encouraging people to do too much stuff. I could only find 2 pieces about the day on their website and they were both hard to find
www.dublincity.ie

As a result we will have a RTS (reclaim the streets) protest party here in Dublin. We feel the city council should be doing more, so in protest we will be blocking off a street and with that trying to get the message across to people that we really must DO something about CO2 emissions and cities gridlocked with cars. Other nodes around Europe will have similar events. Members of the green party have supported these actions in the past
www.freewebs.com is the RTS dublin website

We really need to explore further the question of transport and the city.

you say: "...to get the message across to people that we really must DO something about CO2 emissions and cities gridlocked with cars"

so what should we do about this, in your opinion, speaking as an architecture student?

e.g. Liège - Belgium - 200k habitants.
One of the city's worst problems - imho - is the way it has been re-designed in the 60s (? more or less) giving the full priority to cars and high speed transport. Both banks of the Meuse/Maas have been transformed to "city highways" - while they were tree-lined promenades along the river before. The space along the river - of which the quality is in general improved by the presence of water - lost its character. Other parts of the town are generally dangerous for pedestrians and cyclist because of dense car traffic crossing at high speed and driving in an agressive way.

Mentality is changing. The need of space available to pedestrians without the fear to be run over is getting clear. The loss of urban space quality by un-balanced partition between the means of traffic is becoming clear as well. Projects are running to re-improve the space of the Maas-banks - which will take time of course (as for most projects at an urban scale). But one of the aims of those projects is - afaik - to increase space quality by reducing car traffic. Which is closely linked to the problem of CO2 emissions as well.

It seems clear to me as well that to think about the way we set the balance between car-space|pedestrian/cycle space etc. when designing urban projects (which at the same time has a strong impact on car traffic density and CO2 emission) is part of urban design which should be one of the concerns of architecture students. Town planner were able to contribute to the smog into which Liège (as other cities I presume) is often immersed - why shouldn't they be able to contribute to the way back?

a question of scale
human-house-work-transport-city-industry-greenworld-pollution

you
you live, you make decisions which have consequences further down the line- do you leave the tap on while you brush your teeth? if so how much energy is used to purify the water. how was that energy generated? burning oil or coal/ a massive windfarm? all have conseqences

house
construction-materials, where are they from? special woods flown by plane half way around the world-locally sourced- are they natural or more made up- ie plastics v wood. is there high insulation so as less need for heating. orientation of house- maximize solar gain, cut down on heating again

work
as above- is the paper recyled or landfill? can the office block generate its own electricity? does it collect its own water to cut down on use of treated water

transport
walk-bike-rollerblade-train-bus-car-airoplane- last 4 give out lots of CO2. too much in fact. do you cut down on floghts, only use when necesary? cars in the city- too much gridlock and less quality public spaces, as rimbaud described above

city
buildings as trees. cities as forests
www.cof.orst.edu
William McDonoughs views are essential reading
so to is
fritjof capra as seeing all systems as interconnected networks
best example of a green city is curitiba in brazil. does anyone know anything about this place
what is the european city where the mayor got rid of cars, after he was asked to build the 3rd ring road.
rts helps in the process.

industry
where does all the massive co2 buildings and machinery go. do they pollute or are they monitered. if they let out x amount, do they have to pay for the creation of a new forest that takes in x amount. so they cancel?

greenworld
how much of it is being chopped down, why is it being chopped. is there an alternative. if they keep chopping, we humans die- simple

pollution
can we become more responsible, pollute less?
not just in theory but do you recyle now
3 r`s
-reduce
-reuse
-recylce

its a challenge

finding new preoblems every day and trying to solve them means you have to be creative, it can be fun too.

i hope these ideas add to the debate?
sustainable.ie
is a good essay by a friend
what do you think of these ideas?

despite requests to the EASA community for information as to what went on in peoples own cities, there has been none, bar an email from belgium.

the Dublin City Council closed off no roads this year. To add to this their publicity of the event was so bad that most people were unaware it was Car Free Day.
As a reaction against this Dublin city saw another critical mass and RTS (reclaim the streets) protest party. Also at lunchtime the DCC (dublin cycling campaign) held a wake on the steps of the civic offices to “mourn the death of Car Free Day”. The RTS ended up linking in with the Bin-Tax Protests .

hi again EASA,

just wondering how things went in your countries for car free day last year and also what is planned for this years car free day
ireland has 2 cities that are doing something, very little, for this important event
www.mobilityweek-europe.org
dublin and cork, cork is this years city of culture

state of emergency, is coming into play
easa.antville.org

duncan, Monday, 8. August 2005, 14:50
september 22nd is "international car free day" like other years the irish government have planned very little so plans are underway for the big day
state of emergency - car free day ; 22nd september

a network of different people who are working for a more sustainable world has formed and seeks your assistance and input

on our bikes, sep 22 : state of emergency, attemting to make the dream of dublin as an eco city a reality

we are hoping to further the critical discussion and dreaming in society with more and more people and from that do a few things to demonstrate how things can be more ecological

"state of emergency" is coming into play.....

starting to push the critical discussion

www.indymedia.ie

the world is sad she needs more dreams

What's your dream?

the world is sad, she needs more dreams

it is hoped that there will be a live stream (an audio transmission/ a audio and visual transission/ 2 way audio and visual stream through webcams and screens) on the day between different nodes around planet, primarly between the streets of dublin and the monks garden in venice (venue for irish partipitation in venice bienelle (art olympics)), but also with the possibility of more nodes connecting up or tuning into and participating in this experimental system

it is hoped that various indymedia groups can help with the tek end of this ambitios proposal

dublin eco city group

here in dublin we have set up an eco city group, we are attempting to make an 18km eco corridor for the city, we have created our first of many food production community gardens on the corridor, we do cycles around the circular eco corridor every month, we are in process of setting up a social centre for the city. presently there is an exhibition in the dolphins barn pulic library about the garden.

i was part of imc-oxford when imc-uk decentralised and am part of imc-ireland in a very loose way - mostly writing stuff, photos and audio, also give small imc workshops to different community groups and put on screenings with same groups and sometimes put on screening on the streets

IMAGE

imc is more than a website- a multitude of clusters tuning into and participating in the "critical discussion"

this is an initial call out to see if there is interest from other groups or practical support in making it happen. it is also a request to tell us what plans are underway in your areas for international car free day.... critical mass, reclaim the streets, state sanctioned car free zones, free public transport, eco festivals........

we will be meeting up physically and having discussions and workshops in the garden or other city spaces, we also hope to have online meetings about tek end with other imc'istas if there is interest.

we are aware that is ambitious but it is a STATE OF EMERGENCY, because without a radical change in the way this planet is being exploited life for our species comes to an end here on our home

thanks for your time
