Hows it going, Duncan Crowley from Ireland here, Ive just arrived into the architecture diploma at brookes and a few of us are setting up an; “experimental communication space” in the crit space on Wednesday evenings @ 6-8pm – first one, 2 days time, wed 23rd of October 2002 it is free and open to everyone this wed we will communicate, make montages, show a music film, meet new people and what ever else happens it seems that there is a lot of very interesting people here and a lot of interesting ideas going around, but so far there does not seem to be much interaction outside the units, or even in the units in some cases. So we are trying to remedy that so come along on Wednesday, meet some new people, share your opinions about what you think would improve things here what would make life and college and architecture here at oxford the most exciting place to be in the world? Who knows? But by communicating and experimenting we could do some great stuff and learn The oxford modern art gallery is closed until some time in November, could we make a temporary one, what could we show? This summer a few thousand architecture students from all over Europe will go to Denmark for a 2 week summer school, hopefully some of you will come along. I participated in this event lat summer and it was amazing , we turned a derelict building into an art gallery. There are going to be online worldwide artistic events this year So get involved and have fun Personally I am working toward the FUSPEY ideal – FUN - SUSTAINABLE- PEACEFUL – EXISTENCE You might see me running around college on Wednesday with a tuxedo and an orange wig on See some of you on Wednesday and do bring some old newspapers, magazines, colours, paints, glue, boards, cameras etc Most importantly Have fun This event is open to everyone, not just architects so invite your friends slán libh dunk 21/oct/2002 full story...

Hi EASA people, duncan from Ireland here Just a few things to communicate to you After EASA 2002 – “senses” - vis – croatia
EASA weblog Im not sure if you all know that an EASA weblog has been set up at easa.antville.org It has an open discussion area and you can upload pictures There are links from it to other areas with lots of pics, especially marko from austrias site www.jell-paradeiser.at many people from europe have viewed the site but only a few people are contributing to the discussions why is this? I feel that it is because there is not to much things on the site for an outsider to respond to at present so hopefully more and more interesting discussions will start to happen eitherway when you go there…… have fun EASA community EASA, as a community is now in its mid twenties, like many of us I am proposing that the EASA community, (european architectural students assembly), is more than a few hundred students gathering, communicating and doing things for 2 weeks during the summer. I believe that it is a full time living community who can communicate and do things all the time. Thereby ….
how will we do this?
Communities communicate, we use the NETWORK to do so EASA`s first LIVE european architectural event - sep 22nd 2002 “Towards the sustainable city” an event in every major european city sunday the 22nd of september is international car free day. Have a “reclaim the streets” free city party The purpose of “international car free day” is an attempt by governments to encourage the public to use public transport most european cities will zone off part of the city and provide free public transport. In dublin, ireland this will happen too, but only in a very small area Many of us here in ireland feel more can and should be done so we are planning more than that. We have organised irelands third free street party another “reclaim the streets” We will take to the streets and have a major party. Last year we had @ 300 people and in may we had 1000+ Reclaim the Streets events are parties, but they are also demonstrations; demonstrations of our desire to have a say in how our city and our environment is run, demonstrations of an alternative vision of how public space should be used, demonstrations of ordinary peoples’ ability to organise their own celebrations, based on co-operation and mutual aid instead of competition and greed. Our demonstrations are celebrations of the range of visions of our world that are present in our society. We do not shout towards the deaf ears of politicians, instead we aim to empower people and give them a sense of their own potential for creativity and organisation. This is architectural direct action; making better cities in 1989 in berlin the first love parade happened with 150 people dancing on the streets They danced FOR tolerance, respect and understanding between nations Now you get around 1,500,000. People dancing on the streets every year there. fun I propose that the n.c`s from all countries organise as many people as possible in their own country and if there is a “reclaim the streets”, participate and document it. Then report back to this article on the EASA-weblog after for further discussion about sustainable cities. If there is no RTS in your country, contact you friends and make one, Have FUN EASA 2003 – “sustainability” EASA 1981 – local - the city EASA 2003 – global - the world Next years EASA is happening in denmark and the theme is “sustainability” “A sustainable society is one that satisfies its needs without diminishing the prospects of future generations” lestor brown, quoted in “the web of life” by fritjof capra sustainability is about what goes on in yourself, your room , your home, your neighbourhood, your city, your country, your continent, your world, your universe. You become responsible for your actions and help bring about a healthier world. Learn about energy, waste, food and consumption, buildings and cities, transport on the global level many people are finding out about the social, economic, political mechanisms like the world bank, W.TO. (world trade organisation)and I.M.F. (international monitory fund) which have created hugely destructive and unsustainable systems that cause @ 7,000,000 deaths every year and keep millions world-wide starving. They maintain human poverty and destroy our environments. This is the economic war that has been on since the 1970`s all this need not be the way. Another world is possible. Many people are challenging the W.TO. and I.M.F. We are fighting back, In Seattle on November the 30th 1999, thousands protested on the streets and prevented the W.T.O. meeting from happening. More and more people are finding out about what’s going on. Individuals are educating themselves, organising themselves and taking direct action. As each year passes millions more join the fight. Ecotopia is a 14 year old world environmental gathering. It happened in ireland this year with about 1500 people participating. It was a 2 week long gathering with people living together as a community in an 85 acre forest on the banks of a lake in county clare, ireland. We tried to live as sustainably as possible and had ongoing workshops covering all angles of “sustainability” from organic farming, green building, anti war talks, street theatre, how to take over a building, what to do if arrested etc. Next years ecotopia is happening in the ukraine in mid august? There will be a bike tour to it. So I would encourage all of you to check it out and think about trying to get to the ukraine next year. Numbers are unlimited. And it’s a lot of fun Growing network networks are the systems which allow us to communicate. Talk, post, Telephone, internet and email, mobile phone, etc we are developing a website that will be used as the main node for EASA to participate in the global network. This is a continuation on from the work done at EASA 2002 in constructing the “samogor art gallery” as the central hub in samogor for meeting people and DOing things. a place to exchange ideas, communicate, experiment, learn, have fun. The idea is to have a strong virtual system which allows for real events to happen. Ie. An online forum on “the future of EASA” happening in 30 different cities throughout Europe at the same time, with 5000 people participating in lecture halls, and from another 2000 people connected to independent internet points, whereever they are; vis, moscow, Thailand, peru, an aeroplane, even a space station? Who knows what we can do in the future? The point is to know why! here is a few links to some important websites EASA weblog- easa.antville.org EASA weblog, sotories - easa.antville.org EASA-markos pix- www.jell-paradeiser.at EASA-NETWORK-workshop - networx.antville.org EASA- croatia – 2002 www.arhitekt.hr Ecotopia – www.ecotopia2002.org Sustainable ireland – www.sustainable.ie Reclaim the streets- rts.gn.apc.org Critical mass - www.ma.utexas.edu Indymedia ireland- www.indymedia.ie Indymedia international – www.indymedia.org Main irish architectural website – www.archeire.com Marcel network, don foresta – www.mmmarcel.org Oraiste, my website – www.oraiste.com FUSPEY architectural movement, (the revolution is on, here and now) the revolution is on, here and now
the world view of humans is changing from the old mechanistic to the new systems, dynamic, network one a revolution in how we see ourselves is happening our perception of ourselves, our home and how we deal with each other is profoundly changing why is this? 2 main events
1920 We are beginning to realise where we live; planet earth which just floats in space. We are realising that life is profound, that we are all made up of atoms of which 90% is emptiness We realise that we live in a closed system, that our planet has limited resources. We are starting to take responsibility for being alive and we are trying to do what we can to live in a healthier way. We view architecture as more than just designing buildings. It is about understanding and working with global systems, looking at the problems in this world and working together to create solutions We are working toward the ideal of a FUN SUSTAINABLE PEACEFUL EXISTENCE Pass this on, increase communication You will find this post at easa.antville.org Pass it on to whoever you know, Email it to people, encourage them to get involved in the revolution Why? So as you feel ALIVE Friday the 13th of September 2002 full story...
EASA`s first european architectural event Towards the sustainable city sunday the 22nd of september is international car free day I am proposing that the EASA community, (european architectural students assembly), is more than a few hundred students gathering, communicating and doing things for 2 weeks during the summer. I believe that it is a full time living community who can communicate and do things all the time. Thereby actually doing more progressive things, having a wider EASA body (as there are many who just cant get to that summer event) and communicating about more and more things. In short EASA becomes more effective in bringing about positive architectural change sunday the 22nd of september is international car free day. most european cities will zone off part of the city and provide free public transport. In dublin, ireland this will happen too Many of us here in ireland are planning more than that We have organised irelands third free street party another “reclaim the streets” We will take to the streets and have a major party The picture above is of the last one in may where @ 1000 people partied all day We will continue to do this, it will grow and grow This is architectural direct action; making better cities Below is a picture of the berlin love parade That started in 1989 with 150 people dancing on the streets Now you get around 1,500,000. Re next years EASA theme; sustainability. That is the key to living. In 1981 they focused on the LOCAL, the city In 2003 we will focus on the GLOBAL, planet earth and beyond, our home I say again to you, check when the W.T.O meeting are happening, I think its in paris in 2003. EASA finishing around 3 days after the event would be a good time. I am planning a workshop from next years base to copenhagen for a solidarity protest and city carnival when the talks are on I have been researching the social, economic, political mechanisms which are destroying this planet, our only home for the time being. Many people are challenging the world bank, W.TO. and I.M.F. An economic war has been on since the 1970`s. every year @ 7,000,000- 7 million people die, worldwide environmental destruction, poverty, hunger etc all exist due to unjust social, economic, political mechanisms. We are fighting back, nov 30th 1999 thousands protested and prevented the W.T.O. meeting from happening. More and more people are finding out about whats going on Individuals are educating themselves, organizing, and taking direct action Networks are being used and the battles are non violent largely peaceful protests. We aim to increase awareness and educate, and then to organize to peacefully fight the unjust system These are short-term urban events. I was at ecotopia this year www.ecotopia2002.org it is the main euro tool for change re sustainability. Next year it is in ukraine, unlimited numbers can participate in the 2 week workshop sust living event. I would encourage all of you and all EASA people to come to the ukraine if you can. If you cant, communicate virtually with them and help bring about a more sustainable world That’s about it. A lot of stuff has happened in the last month and a bit. Lots of connections have been made. Lots of stuff learned. Great times if you want more info check out the book "the hidden connections" by fritjof capra, im trying to get him to give a lecture next year. Thanks to all of you, for being interested and interesting Life rocks Dunk The revolution is on, here and now
