im writing to you from a very special place in a very special time; new MAKABRA @ Can Ricart, Pueble Nou, Barcelona ![]() after a profoundly creative, artistic, political, architectural act has combined to create a point in time which i believe has sparked the beginnings of a truly participative architecture to emerge and a space has been (illegaly) created to facilitate the dialogue and space for that dialogue to lead to an actual built reality. In fact that reality is being constructed and built as i write to you. Makabra ( www.lamakabra.org ) have just produced a little bit of magic, entering and occupying the old Can Ricart factory ( www.salvemcanricart.org )in the Pouble Nou Barrio of Barcelona, where 70 years ago the CNT trucks left from to attempt to build a better world ( struggle.ws ). Now its Makabra´s turn to add to the unfolding story of creativity, passion and the love of life. In Barcelonas newspapers this has been front page news since Saturday. Their struggle also has has the support of the UN commisioner for housing, Miloon Kothari, who said "I think your struggle is just, what your doing is correct, I´d just request you to be peaceful.... and keep performing." ( barcelona.indymedia.org ) Viva Makabra Weaving together many strands of life here in Barcelona (community, squat, circus, political, media, humour, history, story telling) they now have a lovley new home and complete support from the ever helpful neighbours. Their struggle also has has the support of the UN commisioner for housing, Miloon Kothari, who said "I think your struggle is just, what your doing is correct, I´d just request you to be peaceful.... and keep performing." ( barcelona.indymedia.org ) This the culmination of what has for me personally been a profound but amazing quarter year architectural journey or battle, from heading to the architecutural bienalle in Venice to "confront" the architectural world (see Cities, radical urbanism, sqatting, social centres - radio.indymedia.org ) to meeting with my old friends from France and living with them in the french Pavillion, METAVILLA ( Onboard the (French) pirate ship METAVILLA (whats being pointed at in Venice this year? - easa.antville.org ) to witnessing first hand, listening to and archiving Lucien Kroll: Moments D`Architectures (http://easa.antville.org/stories/1488710/ ) , which talked about the base of architectureand ecology (the relationship between things), to a healthier "participative bottom up" approach to architecture, planning, society instead of the present which, it was argued, leads to cities burning as we saw in Paris earlier this year in the riots, when communities, people and place are bypassed for profit. ![]() earlier audio with Lucien Kroll talking about this "bottom up planning and architecture which does not exist today" listen to Luciens half hour intro to "From Bauhaus to our uncles house: eco decolonisation" radio.indymedia.org ill keep you posted about progress in this project, as best I can, and I hope that you can manage to understand this difficult and complex situation, and from that support us in this struggle. Its not only a struggle here in Pouble Nou, its about what quality of life people have in other places, its about people taking control of their lives, their communities, their space, their existence. This is the next stage in the "spiritual ecological revolution" ( easa.antville.org ) which is working toward simply a healthy and sustainable existence for all. again EASA have moved this article of profound "architectural" relevance, a little explanation would be not too much to ask for..we hope to hear from the architectural youth of Europe, in fact we'd like them to participate in this project to help build a healthier "architectural world", all things can be improved. regards, dunk sennahoj, Thursday, 7. Re: a little explanation would be not too much to ask for..hi dunc of course a little explanation isn't too much to ask, so i'll just give you a rough overview and forgive me for not going into any length of detail, as this discussion is just getting tiresome ( even though we might not have had it for some time now, but the answer, i give you now, is an overall consensus, not just my personal opinion ) again and again your attempts to "stir up" the "architectural community of easa" have proven futile, to say the least.. they didn't in any possible way succeed, actually, mostly they have proven to be in direct contrast to easa's non-political attitude, however much these principles might contradict your personal and/or political views. this just really points out your distance from the easa-community, imho! in more than one discussion on incm/easa level-discussion, it was decided to let you have your ways, by putting things onto the blog, just to then simply put them off the frontpage. not only that, but it was also suggested to let anyone post a multitude of "stories" afterwards, just simply to let your stories fade away. this was a general easa decision! ( please try to let this sink in and try to imagine why people, who did know you, reached this decision !) so you are of course welcomed to post stories onto the webblog, just do feel reminded that your opinion is no longer welcomed, nor in any way asked for, by the easa community, at least not, that i ( among many others ) am aware of it. i, johannes (former german nc, and guilty of many shortcomings towards the easa-community ) will continue to put any of your stories offline (as in off the frontpage), that are not specifically architecurally orientated, and even the slightest neglect, like commenting myriads of links and/or pointing towards political organisations will have the aforementioned effect. any of your comments will from now on be ignored, as the aforementioned decision, has been reached years before. please direct any of your following comments toward any following easa-event. regards johannes duncan, Thursday, 7. I'm surprised by this visit, because I knew that the EU Housing Ministers’ meeting in Barcelona (16-17 October 2006) has been cancelled by the Spanish government. It wastes an excellent opportunity to dialogue and deal decisively with the housing crisis which is currently affecting all European countries. en.habitants.org www.viviendadigna.org Besos de BCN ;-) duncan, Thursday, 7. hi, thanks for the links, ill look more into them; rejecting neo liberalism in cities, good to see more critical architectural and social views on urban systemsKothari slated the spanish government on the way they have allowed speculation to drive things out of control Vídeo de l'estada del relator de la ONU, Miloon Kothari, a Can Ricard amb Lamakabrai+ Vídeo de l'estada del relator de la ONU, Miloon Kothari, a Can Ricard amb Lamakabrai+: www.blip.tv El relator de la ONU, a Can Ricart barcelona.indymedia.org and barcelona.indymedia.org for more info on barca speculation see barcelona.indymedia.org there should be a very few interesting days and weeks in the new makabra at can ricart over the next while, architects sans frontiers are in direct contact and discussions are underway for bottom up planning project with the locals, many of them have been here a lot to support and fully behind the occupation. perhaps you and more of the barca easa crew will join in? barca really rocks, love it here dunk comment this story:
