6 Questions, many answers: discussion

Six Simple and Hard Questions About What Architects Do Today and Where Their Profession Might Go Tomorrow: And Your View Is ....
was posted here, please only give your answers to the "6 questions"

this area is for discussion arising from answers to the "6 questions"
you can view the questions and answers here on this thread

duncan, March 22, 2005 10:28:17 AM CET

the 2 threads i created yesterday evening "6 questions..." and this one "6 Questions, many answers: discussion" have been moved by the site moderator, out of view away from the front page, where articles normally last for about 1 week, to a hidden zone. quite an upsetting and undemocratic move, but perhaps fitting as there seems to be very little architectural discussion in this EASA communication space.
anyway, we live in hope.........

:most important rule - "Think before you post"
-i did, for quite some time @ 1 month

:a positive contribution to the newsgroup

  • surely the wish to raise further discussion in this "arklab" of sorts would be desirable in europes main ark student website????

Be proud of your postings

  • this discussion is badly needed, ive been trying to raise it here and at EASA meetings- "what is the point of architecture"
BI thankfully did raise this discussion, ive read many of the original 109 posts and they back up a lot of my ideas.

simply = arx need to ask more serious questions and attempt to find answers.
im not proud, im doing my job as a human

last rule
:If you believe someone has violated netiquette, send them a message by private e-mail

  • instead i recieve no mail and my post is moved
maybe i am in your personal danger list due to previous post regarding indymedia?

so, seeing as you have not responded via email yet but have responded publicly and that the "6 questions" does not appear on front page, i am only to presume that you are not repositioning the important thread to where it was.
therefor i repeat my request= change this undemocratic act, replace the "6 questions"

i have contacted BI and their publishers and asked them to support this action in the hope that it might further help their original goal = raise quality architectural thinking and discussion

part of what i wrote to them
" i understand that there might be some problems, copyright etc, with this action but i hope that you can overcome these minor matters and support this action in the hope that it does indeed increas the discussion and furhter add to the amount of stuff in the "ark lab".

i bought the book and am enjoying it, but many other students from the rest of europe wont be able to access it, either it not being stocked in their ark school library or not having sufficient funds, so with this i wonder could you make an exception of sorts and if possible provide online free access to the responses you recieved from the 109 "big names" to the "6 questions". if that is not possible, maybe you could inform those 109 and ask them to put their responses online.

thankyou all for this excellent initiave, i hope it kicks off further this badly needed discussion and from that the world of architecture gets even more responsible and exciting. "

on furhter inspection i see that the topic "architecture" which i created as a new topic for these 2 threads to be placed in has also been wiped
how ironic is that???

duncan, March 22, 2005 11:22:40 AM CET

email to all nc's
"dear fellow EASA community
duncan from ireland here

an undemocratic act has happened on the blog which i would like to bring to your attention
simply i have created a new post "6 questions" : :
which is a further attempt to raise architectural discussion both within and without the EASA community, this is after reading
109 Provisional Attempts to Address Six Simple and Hard Questions About What Architects Do Today and Where Their Profession Might Go Tomorrow
which is a book released by the "architectural laboratory" Berlage Institute

the thread has been moved from the front page without an email or any consultation by it seems, johanes (ex german nc), and the discussion is ongoing, Berlage Institute have been contacted and their input has been requested

i feel this act is undemocratic and would like to have the "6 questions" reinstated on front page, where it was yesterday.
if you scroll through older stories you will not find it, it has been placed in a virtaul no mans lands.
like all problems, this issue can be resolved.

i would hope that sooner rather than later, EASA community can communicate with itself, make a decision (prefarbly by consensus), and take action with the result that the article is placed back on front page (prefarbly front of section, as some time might elapse from now till then with the result of new stories being created with result of pushing story down)

thank you for your time
EASA rocks "

jelkkruk, March 22, 2005 11:47:17 AM CET

get a life dude

jelk NL

  • good work webmaster!!

paradeiser, March 22, 2005 11:40:47 AM CET

and what the ? is the berlage institute supposed to do?
mind your blood-pressure...

duncan, March 22, 2005 11:45:28 AM CET

BI have nothing to do with our problem, bar watching its evolution and perhaps offering advice

but what they could do is to further widen the discussion they created by going along with what i proposed to them above:
" i wonder could you provide online free access to the responses you recieved from the 109 "big names" to the "6 questions". if that is not possible, maybe you could inform those 109 and ask them to put their responses online."
wider reading of the material would be most beneficial to us EASAians but also us coming up with our answers would be most beneficial to us EASAians and to society and the planet too.

paradeiser, March 22, 2005 11:51:14 AM CET

maybe you should repeat it 3 more times - i'm not sure if everybody got your point so far...

paradeiser, March 22, 2005 11:55:41 AM CET

maybe you could achieve more if you wouldnt double post all your stuff. why did you post two stories about the same stuff. did you think about the possibility that was the reason for moving them both?

duncan, March 22, 2005 12:18:32 PM CET

Six Simple and Hard Questions About What Architects Do Today and Where Their Profession Might Go Tomorrow: And Your View Is ....
(for answers to the 6 questions only)

6 Questions, many answers: discussion
communicating; that which we are doing now, in a separate section, so as not to block up the 6 answers

3 times you say:
can i have your response, bitte

paradeiser, March 22, 2005 12:33:13 PM CET

so your rather clog up the whole blog by double posting your stuff - even the same oversize picture.

duncan, as i can see you dont understand, so i just give up on you. the sad thing: you defenetly have some good abilities in raising discussions, but your penetrance just kills all the good spirit. sad you cant dose your abilities in the right way.
i just wont read postings like that anymore. maybe i'm gonna miss something, but you know what - i dont care anymore

duncan, March 22, 2005 12:39:53 PM CET

not a double post, surely thats explained above- it was for clarity fpr nonEASAians when reading the 6 answers, when they came
re pic oversize, in rules it states not WIDER than 400, that rule has been respected

so marko, what is it i dont understand?

if it was someone else would you continue to allow this non-democratic act to remain so?

jelkkruk, March 22, 2005 10:48:03 PM CET

what is non-democratic about moving your recurrent rubbish from the front page?
and why are u really blocked on any website?
and do you really only pretend to be stupid?

schrott, March 24, 2005 3:04:04 PM CET

did you see the rubbish this time?

rimbaud, March 22, 2005 1:34:43 PM CET

dont know why the posting was moved - though it was really kinda getting on the nerves to have that stuff twice.
but a) dunk, claiming undemocratic action and shouting and sending email etc. just kills any possible wish to answer. it trashed the thread which was still clearly visible on the right side of the blog.
b) why didn we get any answer to those six questions from u in the first place?

duncan, March 22, 2005 1:58:49 PM CET

greetings alex
dident hear from you in ireland, hope you had a good time
fortunately the weather was very pleasent

im working on answers to 6 ques, and have been for a while

i can understand that seeing 2 similarish posts was a bit annoying but i hope you can see the logic of it with a wish to not have the 6 answers clogged up with all this stuff; chat/ discussion

re shouting and sending mail- i feel it was an undemocratic move, i asked for it to be restored, it was not and seeing as both johannes and marko (easa blog webmasters) have responded here and it has not been replaced it seems that the blog continues in undemocratic way

and also the wiping of the "architecture" topic.
in my opinion it is unfair and a form of undemocratic censorship.
both johanes and marko have responded petty questions about netiquette rules, all of which i have respected and when i responded to their questions i get no response

jelkkruk, March 22, 2005 10:52:41 PM CET

and why don't you just answer your own questions or write something interesting instead of playing a cry baby?

rimbaud, March 22, 2005 11:16:05 PM CET

ireland was nice - though the journey was quite short ... visited limerick [for what there was to see ... ;) - the univ is nice ] and went to cork on the sunny sunday (that gallery on the university college area is really funny).

all those ppl driving on the wrong side .... ;)

there were two things i was very impressed by (in limerick as well as in cork): all those girls wearing pink O.o in any possible way .... and those stone walls everywhere ... where here in belgium u would find hedges, there are those walls .... sometimes "old-fashioned" new ones ..... weird ;-)

On saturday i had a beer in a pub while looking ireland vs france ... it took me some time to understand the game .... but all so more dynamic and fluid than soccer. unfortunately france won ....

next time i hope to manage to see the more wild northern part ... :)

duncan, March 23, 2005 4:58:29 PM CET

alex- the west, by the atlantic ocean, is the wild part. north is also top spot, esp derry + donegal
glad youd a nice time, they say the limerick girls are the prettiest around, not sure if id agree with that though?
the walls are lovley, but remembering the effort that went into just keeping alive is always there when you see them
its amazing how much my country/ family have changed in only 1 generation
re the game- hurling is the game to see for fluidity; fastest field sport on planet, still occasionaly people die in it, ask johanes

jelk- stuff wrote, your views awaited

johanes and marko + easa community- j+m emailed again, no response. matter still unsettled, await firstly clear explanation for move, second expect EASA community to resolve issue, if not then maybe its time to call it a day

paradeiser, March 23, 2005 6:14:41 PM CET

schrott, March 24, 2005 2:41:25 PM CET

f..., so the little crocodile is going to become famous all over europe. can you just take it away from dunk's link maybe?

it seems that there was a good post on the weblog, wasn't there? i didn't get the story about posting it twice, i haven't seen it. if i look at the posting now, there is no reason to remove both. one could be enough, or the one that makes the double post could be asked in public to remove one of them as it is unnecessary. the problem was: it was duncan's post. and probably, you personally didn't like the topic.

i have used this following word already once when it was about shouting at duncan: childish. there, maybe, it was questionable, but here i think it is used perfectly. of course, the reaction on removing the post was maybe not the best, but i can understand duncan to be upset.

can't we put things in order again and look at the content of the postings without seeing the person behind it first?

p.s. the word undemocratic is problematic because on a blog like ours where people are not extremely involved, it's not possible at all to ask for democratic decisions. the thing is that the webmaster has to make an interpretation of the posting. here i guess that the interpretation was very wrong, and from this perspective i understand the use of the word. and to ridicule someone by changing his links while leaving the posting is kind of primitive. i'd say i'm a bit upset because the whole thing is just purely about fucking duncan, and that's a very sad and cheap attitude.

paradeiser, March 24, 2005 4:03:00 PM CET

1.) nobody removed anything, there is still everything duncan (ever) posted.
2.) double-postings (as duncan said) are kinda clogging up the frontpage (especially if the only thing showing up there are multiple banners - even looking the same)
3.) yes, i'm kinda borded by always cleaning up behind duncan (meaning, everytime he makes his mega-link-postings, i have to open his postings and replace this huge links by the proper link-macro, etc.) and i'm doing this without questioning the content. furthermore i'm doing this not just once per link as they seem to reappear in other postings again.
4.) as i wrote above i gave up on him, so there is nothing to say anymore. thats why i posted a song. (everyone knows i used to take his part some time ago.)
5.) nothing was removed (as i said above) and duncan himself may edit his posting to change the topic or move it to the frontpage.
6.) not sure what you mean saying 'changing his links while leaving the posting'. no links were changed.
7.) it's not all about fucking duncan. but someone always trying to draw the attention just annoys me.

schrott, March 25, 2005 3:55:58 PM CET

right. it's invisible what cleaning work you are doing. so thanks for that. ok, the double posting was very unnecessary.

but the thing that makes me aggressive is the fact that nobody managed to recognise the quality of the posting. i think everybody has asked duncan to change his postings, and the change is very visible (not only in this posting). so if we don't manage to mention the positive things besides a lot smaller mistakes to confirm and support a good tendency, then it is just because of personal things.

@dunk: just do it clean, please? you know that you've done several things not very highly estimated by many people, so just take care 10 times as much not to do anything to upset anybody. probably that's not how you want to act, but sometimes it's necessary to make up for things you don't even feel guilty for. it has to work out somehow, this everlasting fight is really annoying.

we indicate this page here to contributors to easa - every organiser does - because basically it is a GOOD thing. so imagine if future participants, possible lecturers, mega sponsors check the forum, get shocked, leave the page and decide to forget about easa for ever...! it's just sad, from both sides. duncan cannot post correctly, and you 3 (...) don't manage to stand above such things - even if it's annoying, especially as you have the best computer knowledge around here and see behind the things.

one way to help it (i'm sorry, but as the administrator this is charging you again) would be a little manual, easily accessible from the frontpage - for dunk as well as for most of the other people who don't know how some of the things work (myself included for most of it). i think it would help increasing the quality of the site in general. with manual i mean some advice for posting links, adding the little icon, some html tags for bold/italic/probably color fonts and stuff. you can even define the possibilities, only chose a few to keep the style and not have too wild things sith the fonts.

i hope we can find an acceptable solution for everybody and behave somehow acceptably - posting, commenting, critisising - as this is boring.

with the link i meant the song that starts playing when i click on "here" in the posting...

paradeiser, March 25, 2005 6:42:36 PM CET

i'll try to make a little manual if i find some time.
the idea behind a blog-system is: either you know html, then you are free to use it, or you don't, then you should post plain-text.
but if people would just do what they are really capable of, an architect would be a really good paid job. ;-)

the link was unchanged, actually the sound started (a bit delayed) after you opened this story (because you thereby opened my comment as well). so it was just coincidence that it started right after you clicked.

schrott, March 25, 2005 9:33:51 PM CET

in the meantime. just leave away any html stuff, it's not necessary. but the things that help you (if they are respected) could be nice...

eliza_ch, March 26, 2005 10:07:03 AM CET

Flo...that's why you are my FAVORITE FRIEND!!

adam cp, March 25, 2005 7:27:57 PM CET

...been quite away for a little while, and here we go again...

1 - Double postings are not tolerated on any messageboards/blogs I know of, so there's nothing to get upset about.

2 - Marko has defended Dunc a lot in the past, so if he's pissed now I'm sure he has his reasons.

3 - Dunc ruined his own thread by immediately making an off-topic post.

4 - IT'S SO FUCKING RIDICULOUS WE'RE ALLWAYS DISCUSSING DUNCS STUPID BEHAVIOR. He doesn't get it anyway, in fact considering my 3rd point - I think he likes it.

5 - The original 6 questions were a great idea for further discussion.

6 - I suggest we erase this embarassing thread and make a new one with just the 6 questions.

7 - as a punishment to all of us, everybody who posted in this thread HAS to answer those 6 questions before next friday!

8 - this can't go on...

(as proposed by several people)

should we take this flame-postings (this story plus comments) offline?

maybe leave it here as a remembrance, a monument for them who tend to forget...

and just stop drawing attention to it, that might help

and hey hurry up - you got a week for those questions ;-)
!!! don't make adam angry...

lewis, March 29, 2005 9:48:34 AM CEST

red herring: (noun/phrase). a thing that draws the attention away from something important.

see - minutes of INCM Belgrade - re censorship. Decision was made never to censor. However I think this has proven the anti-argument. This is not a posting opportunity for peoples deliberatly agressive poltical oportunism.

schrott, March 30, 2005 4:20:35 PM CEST

you look so harmless on the pic :-)
