all can participate, hopefully all will most will probably join in in ennis and walk the last few miles

it is celebrational it is focusing on the fact that we are alive on this planet and things have to be done to keep it that way we would like if mister bush changed US energy policy and supported the kyoto agreement it is a creative celebrational action

this new "network age" really came into being at the closure of the WTO talks in Seattle due to massive public peaceful protest in november 1999- thats when the term "globalisation" started to get used in the mainstream world. the first indymedia node was also set up at this time in Seattle and since then has developed into a global network of 150+ nodes in 90+ countries. The basic viewpoint held by the "seatttle coalition" was -existing rules of global trading are unfair and have to change -the public are not being informed about these issues as the mainstream media has "vested interests" -new process`s are needed to both challenge, reform or end todays unfair trade rules and to inform the worlds public -along with this a new communication system is needed to facilitate open transperent dialogue for those in civil society so as to either create an alternative fair system or fix the present one

in january 2001, the "seatttle coalition" held the first "world social forum" in Porto Alegre, Brazil. since then there was WSF2, again in Porto Alegre in 2003 and this year WSF3 in Mumbai, India

the technology is already here for us and people are already maximizing it, but it is still early days and so there is a lot more we can do

it is very difficult and near impossible for most to travel and participate in the social fora but it is possible for us to set up a new system, whereby the real and the virtual worlds work together to facilitate a wider participation in the social forum.

it would be a situation whereby when there is a World Social Forum, say in Pakistan, the usual things happen but to expand on that a network is created so that in each country, or each area where there is an indymedia group a convergence or physical meeting centre is set up for the duration of the social forum. this could be say, dublins cultivate centre. the space would allow for those interested in these things to physically meet each other and also to be part of the world social forum. this would happen by live streams and web conferencing technology via the internet. ie- fritjof capra is talking about say "local greeen groups and a global eco city network" in pakistan. that is beamed out through the net and shown in real time in the different centres. in dublin 500 people are gathered in the main space at cultivate and watch the forum, one of our audience wants to add a comment, he lifts his hand, this is registered by indymedia person at computer who clicks to main site that ireland has a comment. this is registered on global network. comments are taken and forum develops through same process as happens at present.

simply we would all be part of the process- literally thinking and being able to act globally while acting and thinking locally

an initial attempt was made on Dec 2 2003 for "global indymedia network project for world social forum in jan 2004" it did not happen. but im sure that it is only a matter of time before this way of communicating becomes the norm. here is second attempt

Based on the 2000 year old falsehood that humans are the sole masters of the planet Earth it could be said that there is nothing wrong in the world other than the socio-economic-environmental disparities that arise from quantum economics: the poor must live in ever smaller, denser, polluted, traffic-riddled, wastelaid mass housing slums far removed from the greenbelts of the corrupt/exploiting professional/business classes whose "careers" thrive on the increasing consumption quantum of the increasing masses whose ignorance is only compensated by the ever larger quantum of hardware/software/construction/infrastructure which substitutes their original identity/affinity as a fellow species of mammals within a system of global bio-diversity which evolved over millions of years. Meat-eating peace activists have for decades queried the essence and rights of bio-diversity on the basis of why care for wildlife and its habitat as long as humans are at war with each other - failing to understand that peaceful co-existence amongst one species is not possible without peaceful co-existence amongst all species. The global development/social activists have also failed to understand that quantum development effectively deprives fellow species of their rightful ancient habitat and progressively destroys the innate co-existential ecological balance which was the global life support system comprising photosynthesis, an unpolluted atmosphere and adequate living space/habitat for all species. The evolution of life over millions of years has been corrupted by the humans since the beginning of the industrial age when quantum replaced natural limits and a need for ever more humans was artifically created first to mass-produce and later to mass-consume what is now mass-produced by automation/computerisation/robotisation. Mass-consumption has been fostered/sponsored and ingrained in the human psyche as a lifestyle/raison d'etre by the simple expedient which is in itself the consequence of quantum economics; i.e. the fact that there is nothing left on the planet which could be peacefully enjoyed without noisy, all-pervading mass-shopping/mass-congregation. Only the corrupt professional/business "elite" can afford the relative peace and tranquility of the remaining greenbelt financed with the money they make from greed/vanity/snobbery and the skills they pass on to each other in destroying the planetary life support system through massive quantum/no limits over-proliferation of the rapacious ideology that drives the global chaos and bio-diversity/habitat inequity. In a last ditch attempt to avoid socio-economic collapse/disintegration the "educated elite" have corrupted national micro- and global macro-economics by the simple expedient of debt-financing the quantum economics which employs the underclasses knowing that this would effectively enslave them to total subservience and compliance and take their mind off any other issues. Debt-riddled/low pay humans have no time for bio-diversity/habitat preservation nor environmental/ecological concerns whilst the "corrupt elite" knows that the quantum consequences arising from the debt-financed mass-consumption frenzy causes irreversible damage to the planetary life support system through habitat and bio-diversity destruction. The greatest deception perpetrated by the "corrupt elite" is the totally false pretence that "ever more development, debt and economic growth" will eventually eradicate poverty and benefit all humans when they already know that multiplying the consumption quantum of one industrialised nation human by all 6500 million humans increasing at 80 million p.a. would literally wipe out what's left of the natural habitat/forests, wildlife and resources while drowning the planet in pollution and waste. This corrupt development/debt/economic growth-ideology is being sold as a "win win" scenario in that to the simpleton both the underclasses and the "corrupt elite" profit from each other: ignoring the fact that the entire global future of the planet is being depleted with total disregard for future generations of all forms of life. This conscious, deliberate, intentional madness/crime is being perpetrated in the name of gods now better known as politicians which have been invented/voted into power to absolve the humans from their self-serving criminal activities and force them into ever more of the same. In Architecture - the corrupt profession which prostitutes itself to the global imbalance and resulting money/debt oversupply by plastering the natural habitat with rubble from planet-destruction on behalf of the unscrupulous developers: the vandalism of a Corbusier or Mies Van der Rohe et al reflects the egocentric brutalism of the 20th century human. The fact is that without debts humans would have to exist within their limits therefore humans would have to limit their numbers and share the planet, its resources and habitat equitably with all life. Instead we have now a global economy where massive individual, corporate, state and government debt mountains must drive massive underlying inflation masqueraded as "economic growth" to minimise the debt impact; i.e. debt which is constantly refinanced with more debt which drives the ongoing global breeding frenzy as ever more debt must be divided by ever more humans and their economic quantum activities. The so-called "free market economy" is only free for those who make short-term financial gains: the real cost is borne by the global life support system which is collapsing from the quantum impact of human activities. Since 1950 some 4000 million additional surplus humans are feeding the "corrupt elite" with a reason to demonstrate money-making planet destruction proclivity. Expansive money-making that must be recycled into the local/global economy, bolstered by unprecedented debts which finance the limitless, corrupt global economy. Originally debt constituted the assets/savings of depositors and a balance existed between the two. Now banks are lending in excess of 1000 times the amount of their deposits in a gigantic global debt explosion which does nothing other than to finance the extermination of global bio-diversity, the destruction of the shared global habitat, massive pollution, resource depletion, wastelaying and resultant life support system checkmate. The self-evident stupidity/arrogance of the "corrupt elite" and their meaningless/material wasted lives is highlighted by the absurdity of their mutual support conspiracy whereby short-term profit, "economic growth", the "free market economy" and so-called ambitions and achievements are applauded over long-term co-existential equity and freedom between all forms of life. As long as humans continue to corrupt themselves with their insane "invented god" ideology with which they falsely empower themselves and set themselves above all life and consider only what suits the breeding and over-proliferation of ever more humans all hopes of an equitably sustainable future are in vain and all pretensions to that effect a contrick on global society. This contrick on global society is manifested in the educational system which compartamentalises subjects without cross-reference or context so that corrupt economists/accountants/lawyers/architects/civil engineers/directors/managers/media people and just about all so-called professors don't know the first thing about the necessity for ecological co-existential balance between bio-diversity, habitat and human activity. Indeed they even have made a moneyspinning business out of the global environmental destruction; a rapidly growing money supply which comes from planet destruction and a rapidly growing money supply that goes back into planet destruction. In their ultimate corrupt form they pricetag wildlife and plants by their "economic" value to humans. It is not unreasonable to say that if humans want to self-destruct; why not let them carry on. However, it is grossly unethical, immoral and criminal to exterminate, destroy and annihilate fellow species and their habitat at the same time. If humans want to live in deserts let them share the deserts with the desert fauna and flora yet it is criminal to turn the rest of the planet into deserts simply to accommodate ever greater masses of surplus humans whose sole purpose in life is to actively participate in the grotesque self-destruction scenario. The sick career ambitions of the achievement/money driven humans must stop now: there can be no further development or construction or economic growth. They must be re-educated into environmental awareness, ecological appreciation and habitat/wildlife regenerative activity with the clear und unequivocal understanding that all humans must drastically reduce their numbers of births and economic quantum impact if anything is to make sense.

Get onto the streets, make them clean, habitable and fun places again

The European Mobility Week and "In town without my car!" initiatives arose from a finding: today almost 40% of the transport sector's CO2 emissions are produced by the use of private cars in cities.

A switch to more efficient and cleaner forms of transport would contribute to a reduction of traffic congestion, air pollution, traffic related diseases and noise.

Awareness raising, promotion of changes in behaviour and involvement of citizens are the key words for the development of a sustainable and efficient urban transport.

“EASA`s first European architectural event”, was an attempt to get us (Europe’s student architects ) to DO something positive for European car free day last year, to recognise that “cars in the city” is a major SUSTAINABLE issue we have to deal with. In Dublin hundreds of us “reclaimed the streets” and partied. We will be doing so again this sep22 and we hope you also get involved with the RTS street parties in your area. the AGORA was the space in ancient greece where philosophers, mathmaticians, scientists, artists and anyone who was interested came to COMMUNICATE @ 3000 years ago. there were amazing thinkers such as socrates, pythagores, democritus, hereclitus, aristotle and good old plato

they discussed, explored, played with and loved IDEAS. this is where man developed most of the principles we use today; law, philosoophy, science, religion, reason, logic, mathematics and more.

there have been some earth shattering breakthroughs in science during the 20th century that have resulted in a PARADIGM (something just short of infinite)SHIFT in the scientific worldview. in the 20´s we developed the tools to look into the atom, which we thought was the smallest solid piece of matter. we found that in fact 99.9% of the atom is pure emptiness and that that it is minute particles that zoom around that give the appearance of solidity. so the scientific world found out that existence is nothing more than dynamic everchanging forms of energy...... which is what the EASTERN world has been telling us for thousands of years in its religions.

chaos theory has also profoundly affected our view of things with its FRACTAL thinking and viewing.

so we are remembering again that life is strange.

along with this we have developed amazing communication systems that allow people to be anywhere in the world while being able to communicate with someone else anywhere in the world; phones, internet, webcast, chatrooms.....

so we have the stuff, but where are we talking and what are we talking about?

ladies and gentlemen we are living on a planet that is floating in a bizarre and beautiful universe. “A sustainable society is one which satisfies its needs without diminishing the prospects of future generations.” Is how Lester Brown defines things. It is only recently that we started to live unsustainably, we must learn how to simply work with nature again. What are we? We are EASA, the body that makes up the architectural students of Europe. What have we been saying to the world? We want to have fun and don’t care about what goes on in the world. Why do I say this; EASA came about from a need for radical change when students got together in Liverpool city in 1981 to challenge things and improve the city but this quickly (d)evolved to what was the EASA experience of the last few years, mainly 100´s of students going to an island and doing arty farty workshops while having a lovely fun holiday in the sun (which is always important). Thankfully though things have changed, Danish students have made us focus on “sustainable living”, this is a major progressive step. Perhaps this old apolitical and uncaring view was a reflection of the wider architectural world?

So what can we do? I feel we are going through a massive step in world history; that we are living in the network age. We have the technology to communicate like we never could before and with this some amazing things are happening. Concerned people around the world are starting to question what way this world is being used, with this they are finding that there are some unhealthy social, economic and political systems that are not making our world more peaceful and sustainable. More people are becoming informed and with that more are starting to take action- “another world is possible” one that is sustainable, peaceful and fun

Communication is the key to all this, spreading the ideas. Unfortunately though, EASA so far, has not embraced these changes.

We could communicate more, we could be more creative; we could do more exciting things. It is great that we come together for the 2 weeks of the summer, but wouldn’t it be great if we did things all year?

How progressive is EASA? easa.antville.org “EASA should become a network” was the advice Don Foresta gave us last year, did we listen? A network is a community that lives, evolves, creates, plays, and communicates both in the real and the virtual worlds together. By utilizing today’s technology there is no end to what we could do, its there for us to play with, why are we so slow to experiment with what we can do and push things to their limits

Last Easter some Bosnian students had the vision to develop a workshop around this question. Workshops were done, an exhibition was put into the state art gallery and an the initial steps of an going process were put into place. We are not sure how well things have progressed but expect to hear from the Bosnian team tonight.
