For those joining us, a quick recap: Darklight explores the convergence of art, film, and technology and focuses on work that challenges concepts, visual aesthetic, narrative, access, methods of production, and dialogue, through contemporary film-making techniques. We support and encourage work that pushes technological boundaries and displays creative excellence. Our mission is to nurture new talent and to create bold new possibilities for the imagination. Which is where you come in. Eligible for entry are feature films, documentary, all CG animation, Flash, 3D etc., experimental video works, music videos, commercial work, motion graphics, game sequences, DV live action shorts and student work. There are no restrictions on genre, length or number of submitted works.

Architecture and Dissent (And from talking to action...)

The Berlage Institute (an architectural laboratory) have organised a series of Springtime public lectures on the theme of Architecture and Dissent.

This program of dialogues addresses the relations between architecture, power, and political dissent. By debating the cultural currents transforming contemporary daily life and, subsequently, shared spatial practices, this series of events promotes an open dialogue reflecting on today’s architectural condition.

Can architecture politically engage a global market-driven power structure? Is it possible to find alternative means of operating architecturally within this dominant system? How should architecture and urbanism address economic development, popular culture, and a design-driven consumerism? Does architecture—as both an intellectual discipline and a professional practice—contribute to stabilizing the inherent social inequalities of the contemporary city?

URGENT: Action against climate change

Various environmental organizations are asking the peoples of this planet to hold 5 minutes of silence: Everyone should turn off all lights, electricity etc. between 7:45 until 8 p.m. to bring attention to other inhabitants, the media and politicians about the daily waste of energy. An act which takes only 5 minutes, which cost nothing, but shows the governments that climate change should be on the top agenda of world politics.

In 2 weeks time the world tunes into dialogue from Kenya. Whats being discussed, hows it being discussed, why is it important?

The 7th edition of the World Social Forum brings the world to Africa as activists, social movements, networks, coalitions and other progressive forces from Asia-Pacific, Latin America, the Caribbean, North America, Europe and all corners of the African continent converge in Nairobi, Kenya for five days of cultural resistance and celebration; panels, workshops, symposia, processions, film nights and much much more; beginning on the 20th of January and wrapping up on the 25th of January 2007.

Organizers in Kenya, throughout Africa and around the world will work together, both on-line and in face-to-face meetings, to build a temporary independent media center in Nairobi, Kenya, to provide communication during the January '07 World Social Forum. This "convergence-based" IMC will provide text-based, audio, and (potentially) video coverage of the World Social Forum, both on-line and through a local low-power radio station, enabling independent media coverage of the WSF during the forum itself as well as access through the world wide web to the WSF by an international audience.

The IMC will also be a hub for trainings and hands-on media-making workshops throughout the World Social Forum. Thousands of organizers will be coming to the World Social Forum from around the globe, especially from Africa; this IMC will empower activists (especially those in Africa) to create effective independent media institutions in their countries. Also, all the equipment purchased for this IMC will remain in Kenya for use by the Kenya IMC and other Kenyan independent media projects. The IMC plans to be open from January 13 to January 25. The WSF itself takes place from January 20-25.

:: Global Radio nodes project ::

This is a proposal to Syndicate content from different nodes in social centers and other alternative media outlets during the WSF and combine it with content from Nairobi also. A kind of global collaboration on both virtual and physical.

Basically getting more social centres and other spaces to open up during WSF as local nodes around planet to go to to firstly listen to stuff live from kenya, but also maybe where they could have 2 way systems: being able to participate in forum without physically being there.

How?

1 - terrestrial and web radio stations can tune their stations into the radio streams from Nairobi. hopefully there will be many streams coming out of Nairobi during the WSF.

2 - physical spaces outside Nairobi can open for duration of WSF, or part of, with radio speakers playing the audio live from Nairobi, and video stream if it happens. these physical spaces can have information, exhibition, films etc about the social forum project... possibly also computers tuned into imc-kenya for the duration of the forum, in the hope that the imc-kenya site becomes an active resourse during the wsf and beyond... local forums or discussions can happen in these spaces about some of the issues raised within the WSF or about the nature of the WSF itself, where it is now, where its going etc...... already collectives in Dublin, Barcelona, Marseilles, Philidelphia, Ohio, Genoa are offering support.

3 - while the WSF is on, perhaps there is possibility of those outside Nairobi at home in their own spaces trying to experiment with the limits of how we can communicate as a global network while wsf is on. this might happen, who knows....

im writing to you from a very special place in a very special time; new MAKABRA @ Can Ricart, Pueble Nou, Barcelona

after a profoundly creative, artistic, political, architectural act has combined to create a point in time which i believe has sparked the beginnings of a truly participative architecture to emerge and a space has been (illegaly) created to facilitate the dialogue and space for that dialogue to lead to an actual built reality. In fact that reality is being constructed and built as i write to you.

Makabra ( www.lamakabra.org ) have just produced a little bit of magic, entering and occupying the old Can Ricart factory ( www.salvemcanricart.org )in the Pouble Nou Barrio of Barcelona, where 70 years ago the CNT trucks left from to attempt to build a better world ( struggle.ws ). Now its Makabra´s turn to add to the unfolding story of creativity, passion and the love of life. In Barcelonas newspapers this has been front page news since Saturday.

Their struggle also has has the support of the UN commisioner for housing, Miloon Kothari, who said "I think your struggle is just, what your doing is correct, I´d just request you to be peaceful.... and keep performing." ( barcelona.indymedia.org )

Viva Makabra

Weaving together many strands of life here in Barcelona (community, squat, circus, political, media, humour, history, story telling) they now have a lovley new home and complete support from the ever helpful neighbours. This the culmination of what has for me personally been a profound but amazing quarter year architectural journey or battle, from heading to the architecutural bienalle in Venice to "confront" the architectural world (see Cities, radical urbanism, sqatting, social centres - radio.indymedia.org ) to meeting with my old friends from France and living with them in the french Pavillion, METAVILLA ( Onboard the (French) pirate ship METAVILLA (whats being pointed at in Venice this year? - easa.antville.org ) to witnessing first hand, listening to and archiving Lucien Kroll: Moments D`Architectures (easa.antville.org ) , which talked about the base of architectureand ecology (the relationship between things), to a healthier "participative bottom up" approach to architecture, planning, society instead of the present which, it was argued, leads to cities burning as we saw in Paris earlier this year in the riots, when communities, people and place are bypassed for profit.
